Greater Profits In Fat Cattle One of the greatest weaknesses of the Basin cattlemen, and a practice by which they lose a lot of money is their failure to feed out their stock before putting them on the market. Most of the cattle raisers do not seem to realize the difference in the price they get for range cattle to that which they could get for the finished animals,, and therefore ship the feeder stock. For the feeder stock the price runs about 9 or 10 cents per pound, and the cattle weigh about 900 or 1000 pounds. But if the cattle are kept a little longer, and fed until they are fat they would then weigh 200 or more pounds than the feeders, and the price would then be about 15 cents per pound for the entire animal. This practice seems so simple that we wonder why so much hay is still sent out of the Basin, and so many feeder stock are also sent out to eat the hay and get fat outside of the Basin, when they should be fattened here. It seems hard to convince some of the old timers that they can make a good profit from buying grain, and growing corn for silage, and following an intelligent feeding program. We again advise all cattle raisers to get in touch with their county agent, and also to learn something from those who are now feeding out their livestock. Commissioner L. J. Gilbert is well known in this area. He recently shipped 38 head of finished cattle, for which he received a price far above what those who sell feeders receive for their cattle, and this allowed him a very good margin of profit for the grain and silage which he fed. We ship out each year vast quantities of hay, and thousands of head of feeder cattle, which experienced cattle raisers purchase in other places and make a profit both from the hay and the cattle, while we sit here and complain about the hard conditions we have in the Basin. These conditions need not be so hard if we will intelligently cooperate, and learn the proper practice in raising cattle for profit, and make the profit ourselves.
