Products, such as. butter were bought in an effort to bolster prices, and later dumped, bringing them lower than ever. | Investigations were started. Wall Street, Banking and what not, ending in the sensational charges con- cerning the airmail, and the drastic action taken in cancelling all contracts, and turning the mail over to the army. : 3 | These and many other things we have seen done by the president in fulfilling his promise to give “direct, vigorous action”. Where the end is we cannot yet see. Almost all the action taken has been addmittedly experimental. Some of it has proved _ good, some not se good. Some has been continued, some dropped. Doubtless 10 years from now we can look back and pick out the mistakes from the correct moves, now is too early to be sure. Of this much however, we can be sure. Some thing has been done. We have moved. “Better to have tried and failed than not to have tried at all” seems to have been the feeling of the bulk of the people the past year, and merely taking part in the attempt has in many cases brought a feeling of en- couragement, which in itseif has gone far towards putting the depression in the past tense. That the experiences of the past year will go far towards helping both the administration and the American people in finding a firmer footing, and learning to properly play their cards of the “New Deal” is to be devoutly wished.
