Time is fast approaching for the Duchesne county political conventions for the two major parties. The Republicans will meet together next Saturday, Aug. 11, at 2 pm. to select their candidates for county commissioners. On the following Wednesday, Aug. 14 at 8 p m. the Democrats will hold forth. Both confabs are in the Duchesne County Courhouse. comVieing for the four-yea- r mission post on the Republican ticket are the incumbent, Floyd E, Lamb, Heber T. Hall and Hollis G. Hullinger all of Roosevelt. Three candidates have .filed for the two year post: Elmer Moon, incumbent, C. Dean Powell both of Duchesne, and Claud Wagstaff of Tabiona. Van D. Winterton is the nly GOP candidate for the state legislature. The convention Saturday will select two for each commission post, who in turn will enter the Sept. 11 primary election 'to choose a nominee for the general election in November. Only One Contest When the Democrats gather next Wednesday at the Court House in Duchesne the only contest they will have to witness and decide will be for the state on Back Page) colorful parade Wednesday evening marked the opening of the annual Uintah Basin Industrial Convention as hundreds of visitors and townsfolk lined the streets to see the always popular kickoff feature. A band concert, conducted by Owen F. Burgener, was presented Wednesday evening following the parade. Other Wednesday night activities were a talent show, childrens movies, and a dance. All of the UBIC activities were planned and are being carried' out under the direction of George Stewart, 1956 UBIC president. A repeat of the parade Thursday morning started the second days activities. Following the parade the group proceeded to the city park for the first general session. Miss 1956 UBIC Marilyn Anderson, queen and her two attendants, Miss Diane Nelson and Miss VaLoy Reynolds were properly introduced and presented to the convention. First Session The first general session was under the direction of Owen F. Burgener, and the opening address was given by LeGrande Richards, LDS Church apostle and president of the USAC board of trustees. The afternoon general session, which started' at 1:15 pm. was under the direction of Kenneth D. George Aycock, chairman. Clyde spoke to the group on the Upper Colorado River Project and other reclamation programs connected with the Uintah Basifi. Reports indicate that outstanding department sessions were held Thursday afternoon. Tonight, instead of the usual show will talent show, an be presented. The Lettermen, a professional quartet and Fred Ketch, ventriloquist, and his co.v-bo- y dummy, Jerry Jerry will entertain the group. Fridays activities will begin with the baby show at 9 a.m. chilat the grandstand. Forty-fiv- e dren, who were selected from the preliminary judging will partici pate. Immediately following the baby show the third general session will begin. Mrs. Parley Rawlings will conduct the session and John S. Brady as principal of the Duchesne High School for the comhas ing school term of 1956-5been announced by Supt. Rowan C, Stutz, of the Duchesne County school district. He will succeed Farrell J. Humphreys who has moved from the district. A native of Fairview, the new principal is a son of Mr. and Mrs. N S. Brady. He was graduated from North Sanpete High School at Mt. Pleasant in 1941, and received his A. B. degree from the Brigham Young University in 1948. He was awarded his master of arts degree at the BYU in 1951. During World War II, Mr. Brady served nearly three years in the armed forces. Thirty months were spent in Europe as a member of the 101st Airborne division. Since 1949 he has taught instrumental music in the Provo City schools. A family man, Mr. Brady is married to the former Mary Hafen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jay Hafen of Mt. Pleasant and they have three1 daughters. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints, during the past four years he has served as treasurer of the Utah Music Educators association. The new principal will arrive in Duchesne during this month to assume his new duties. 7, NEW PRINCIPAL at the Duchesne High School is Stanley R. Brady,, native of Fairvicw,, and graduate of the B. Y. U. holding B. S. and M. A. degrees. He comes from Provo city schools. Hope Mounts For Designating 40 As Super Highway Mayor Chester Lyman of Duchesne lead a delegation of public officials and other citizens from Duchesne and the county at large last week as they met with state political leaders seeking support for Highway 40 as a designation on the federal highway system. Other communities along 40 were in attendance at the meeting with the state road commission, governor. Salt Lake City mayor and commission. , In the Duchesne delegation were mayor Lyman, Ray Horrocks, Carl Wilkerson, James Hatch, B. A. Jacoby. Ed Lundgren, John Gilbert and Don Bench. All three members of the board of county commission, Floyd Lamb, Roosevelt, Lyle Young, Mt. Emmons and Elmer Moon, Duchesne were numbered with the delegation. Aggregate of taxable property ll for 1956 is $1,274,530. The levy, on a 90 per .cent collectable basis, will net approximately $30,971. According to Russell Gingell, general chairman of the tournament and manager of the Myton kids team, who recently were decked out in brand new uniforms, the three day affair is being sponsored for two purposes. First, to give the youngsters a chance to show what they have learned about baseball the past summer, and second, to raise funds to pay for the Myton suits. The championship games will be on Saturday, with games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoon. A Salt Lake City attorney and a Provo irrigation engineer have been retained by the Duchesne County Water Users Association to handle water problems on the upper Duchesne River, according to Elwood B. Carter, association president. Irrigation water attorney, Edwin J. Skeen is assisting the local water users group in investigating filings and for allocation of additional appropriations on the Upper Duchesne River at Duchesne to its headwaters. This supplementary water is available to landowners along this stream for new land development as well as filings for supplementary water on land now being irrigated without water rights, Mr. Carter pointed out. Local ProjcctsMay Be Included In Small Projects Bill Mystery Remains Unsolved, Tests Prove Bones Are Male Human bones found near Myton several weeks ago by a group of primary boys from the Roosevelt LDS ward who were on a field trip with their teacher, have been identified as part of a human skeleton of a male. They had been submitted to a physical anthropologist for analysis. Immediately following the return from the trip Kent Memmott, Allan Swenson and Danny members of the Guide and Trekker classes, and their teacher, Mrs. Rex Curry, notified the sheriffs office of finding the human bones. Following a local investigation, sheriff Lorin Stevenson submitted the bones to Dr. Wilton of - PennKrogman, University sylvania, during the middle pert of June.
