BOARD OF EDUCATION Duchesne County School District First Publication, Sept. 9, 1954 Last Publication, Sept. 23, 1954 (5) 12-1- 1 12-1- 1 Marlowe In Utah County, Democratic strategists think they can pick up one of the two Senate posts, both now held by Republicans. They hope for at least two of the five House seats. In Salt Lake, Democrats point out that very seldom is there an election year split in the Senate contingent to be elected. This year, two Republicans and one Democrat put their seats on the line. Democrats are quietly predicting they will win all three seats in the Senate. They are also predicting they will take 14 of 19 House seats. That alone would give them a real springboard on the way to possible Legislature control. This picture, particularly in Salt Lake City, is not a pleasant one to Republicans, and particularly to Republicans in counties other than the Big Three. There has always been a considerable tendency among Salt Lake County legislators to regard outside of Salt Lake as unimportant. It has been the experience of this writer that some of the Democrats in the Legislature have been more prone to hold this attitude than have the Republicans, although this unfair and unfounded feeling is not confined to politicians of one party. A good many Salt Lake citizens who should know better also seem to hold this idea. The general consensus under the Dome is that Republicans can hold control of the Legislature but not without an all-obattle against the resurgent Democrats. self-style- pro-lab- d or Neither Sen. Alfonzo F. Hopkin of Woodruff nor Sen. Francis Fowles of Ogden have any opposition. The Democrats are basing their battle for control on a campaign aimed at swinging the counties Salt big three Lake, Weber and Utah into their camp. They are sure of Webers senator.
