THURSDAY. 3G Program Honors Teachers, Two Parties Post Candidates And School Personnel A program and social, spon- sored by the Duchesne County Board of Education last Sunday at the Duchesne Stake Cenler, honored school personnel and interested patrons prior to the opening of school. Supt. Rowan A. Stutz presided at the meeting. Blain Winters, from the State Department of Public Instruction, was the featured speaker, discussing the moral and spiritual values of education. The invocation was given by Theron Leavitt, school board member, and organ music was furnished by Mrs. Arzy Mitchell. Welcome was given by Wm. Harris, president of the board. Musical numbers were furnished bv a ladies duet and a mixed chorus from the University of Utah, under the direction of Professor Neilson. The benediction was offered by Edwin L. Murphy, member of the board. Following the program a reception was held in the recreation hall, under the supervision of Mrs. Reva Owen and Mrs. Walter Williams. The Grand Champion beef, owned and exhibited by Hugh Evans of Arcadia, ws sold to George C. Kohl, owner of Kohls Market in Duchesne, for 280 per pound. Several lambs were sold at the auction with the grand champion, owned by Ronald Hackett of Hanna, being bought by Dean Todd of the Uinta Sale Barn of Roosevelt for 500 per pound. Alfonzo Madsen, Duchesne, was the buyer of the reserve champion lamb, exhibited and owned by Jerry Giles. He paid 2O12 0 per pound for this animal. The first livestock sale ever attempted during a county fair was declared very successful by Robert Murdock, county agent, and members of the livestock committee. A bigger sale is already anticipated for next year. Exhibitors who won special prizes in the various categories of the livestock department of the fair are as follows: grand champion fat beef, exhibited by Hugh Evans, won show halter given by Berts in Roosevelt; breeding sheep, prize given by Duchesne Drug Co., a breeding harness, was won by Fairbanks Livestock Co. of Arcadia; a show halter was presented by Browns, Inc. for the grand champion beef heifer, and won bv Jerry Merkley, Duchesne. Winslow Rhoades of Hanna presented a registered Suffolk ewe lamb to the grand champion winner in the fat lamb class, and Ronald Hackett of Hanna was the exhibitor who' was awarded the grand champion ribbon, and the registered ewe lamb. According to Mr. Murdock day, Sept. 3, y Five Winners Are 4-- H 4-- H 4-- there were a number of other special prizes donated to club participants, and these will be presented at the coming achievement program sometime in October or November. It is asked, and stressed, bv the officers in charge, that anyone present at the scene of an accident, or like situation, to help persons in trouble by doing what can be done in the way of first aid, but to leave the scene as near undisturbed as possible until the officers have a chance to make an investigation. They ask the cooperation of everyone in this respect. . . and pass the message on. Qualified voters of Utah will go to the polls next Tuesday, Sept. 14, to select nominees of both major parties to compete in the coming general election on Nov. 2. In the primary election Tuesday, voters will either have to vote Democratic or Republican there cant be any scratching at this election. Parachute Jumper Missed The Arena The parachute jumper at the Fair Saturday night descended into Albert Petersons back yard instead of the arena at the fairgrounds. Mrs. Peterson said the jumper landed on the ground, but his chute lodged in a tree in their yard. Smith Vernal Oil Dealer Wins Ford, Gas At Duchesne Fair Harold Richardson, of Vernal, was the lucky winner of the 1954 Ford sedan awarded to a donor to the Duchesne Health Center fund Saturday night during the last activities of the 1954 Duchesne County Fair. Mr. Richardson .was not present when his name was announced as winner, but Carl Wilkerson, of the Duchesne Motor called him. Richardson, who delivers wholesale Texaco products, had obtained four donor tickets from the Duchesne Motor, local Texaco distributor. In addition to the Ford, which retails in the neighborhood of $2500, Mr. Richardson will receive 100 gallons of gasoline, donated by Richard John-stuof Duchesne, Conoco Oil Company distributor. An accounting of ticket sales by the Duchesne Health Center committee shows that 2690 tickets were purchased. Out of this number, 929 stubs had a Duchesne address, 1030 had county addresses other than and 731 were sold outside the county. Girls Club Winners At Fair Announced 4-- H e, 4-- H County Cuts Tax Levy By Nine Mills Over Last Year Total general 'tax levy for Duchesne county for 1954 is 30.95 mills, representing nearly a 9.00 mill decrease over the 39.85 levy last year. This tax levy annonucement was made by Porter L. Merrell, County clerk and auditor, following approval of all taxing unit levies as presented to the State Tax Commission by Duchesne County taxing units. The 30.93 mill levy is made up of the 10.95 county levy and the 20.00 local school levy. io were levied for Duchesne County taxpayers for No state taxes 1954.
