Editor UINTAH BASIN RECORD RESTORED TO REGULAR SIZE WEEKLY NEWSPAPER . . . -- Uvvvwewlj This week sees the fulfillment of a promise made two months ago that on or before the first of the new year the Uintah Basin Record would be transposed from (5 column x 15 inch) paper, to a standard-siz- e a tabloid-siz- e (7 column x 20 inch) newspaper. This was a promise of DuI made shortly after I became chesne countys two newspapers, which seemed to with the hopes and desires of readers of the Record. When I made that promise I emphasized the need of support of the business establishments of Duchesne city, stating that it would be impossible for any business to long function without revenue and advertising is the of any newspaper. I have kept my promise in spite of the definite decline of local advertising prior to last week, and intend to, as has been stated in this column the people of Duchesne a newson various occasions,-givpaper they will be proud of and enjoy. The American Christmas card, sometimes looked upon as expensive and unnecessary, but with all a cheerful symbol of the holiday season, celebrates its diamond anniversary this year. In 1875 a Boston lithographer named Louis Prang, hesitantly published the countrys first Christmas cards and wondered if anybody would tauuthem. This year more than a million and a half will sparkle from the nations mantels, an average of better than 40 per family. The worlds first Christmas card was actually end graved in 1842 in London by a apprentice. for sale, it was a complete failure and soon forgotten. Louis Prang arrived in New York City in 1850, a .skilled callico printer from Germany. He loved Killarney votes and specialized in delicately-tinte- d flower prints. But when the Civil war cune it nearly ruined his trade, and he switched hurriedly to war maps and portraits of generals. Meanwhile he perfected the recently invented processes of color lithography. The custom of exchanging Christmas cards had its moat rapid spread after World War II. And with rapidly increasing variety in designs, people everywhere began .to regard Christmas cards as their personal messengers of holiday good cheer. ii ii(ii:A' u ' qt , 0::nty Pcrfcsti 1 When the special Christmas program and decoration commit- ' tees complete toe Jobe they out Tuesday nlht at too home of Harvey Partridge, the City of Duchesne will take on a holiday atmosphere and appearance second to Sane to toe cotta-4 . try it the ifttotoit ef Mzycr Johnson, who preaided over Lm meeting that was attended - by every religious and civic organization in town.
