You know that you always travel on the right side of the road, do not exceed the speed limit, give the proper traffic signals, and have never yet been in an accident. But stop and think a minute! Do you own cattle, horses or livestock of any kind ? Are your fences in good condition, or occas-sionaldoes one of your cows or horses wander through a neglected hole in the fence and stray out on to the highway at night? This apparently harmless meandering of stray livestock constitutes one of the gravest traffic hazards in the Uintah Basin. Have you ever bean traveling serenely along some dark night, when all of a sudden out of nowhere looms a big black cow or horse, directly in front Of you? A quick turn to the left or right is the only thing to save you from bumping squarely into it. Now a turn to the left is perfectly safe ly providing there isnt a car be- hind you, or one approaching you. And a turn to the right is safe providing there isnt a soft shoulder or bar pit waiting to turn you over. If youre lucky your quick turn will be successful and all will be well. But who likes to depend on luck? All too often one or more cars are tipped over and considerable damage done to persons, property and livestock. This type of accident is a willful waste and could and should be avoided. People who own cattle or livestock and allow 'them to get out on the highway are as much at fault as reckless drivers and ignorance of the condition is no excuse and doesnt help to pay doctor bills. The law says: No person owning or controlling the possession of any livestock, shall willfully or negligently permit any such livestock to stray upon or remain by a person in unaccompanied charge dr control 'thereof upon a No person shall public highway. drive any such livestock upon, over or across any public highway during the period from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise, without keeping a sufficient number of herders on continual duty to open the road sc WEATHER REPORT For week beginning Jan. 14. of our existence as a nation, and during those 122 years we fought four wars, including the one between the states.
