WARNER (Utah Experiment Station) Many people neglect their turkeys during, the jsummer months after the brooding season Is over, and as" a result of this neglect do not realize what they should in cash returns when the - birds are marketed be- cause they are not as large and well ' developed an they shonld be to bring the best price. The turkeys should be given systematic care and treatment throughout the summer and fall until they are ready for the market. Make snre your turkeys are free from mites and lice, as these external parasites will do more - harm and damage than one would think. They' keep- the birds thin and scrubby, lower their vitality (which makes them susceptible to disease, and in spite of good feed they will not grow out as well as they otherwise would. Catch the birds and treat them with sodium fluoride, using tbe pinch method, which is to put. a pinch under each nring, one in the fluff near the vent, and tone under the throat. This is very effective and well worth while doing. Turkeys should have a good feed of scratch grain every evening even though they have good range, as this will teach them to comae home every night. This may consist of wheat and corn and a little oats. It isnt' a bad pc Hey to have a little dry mash in' a h&pper which shonld be opened up in the late afternoon. The mash should be about the same as that recommended for laying hens with about half as much meat meal, or if range is good, the meat meal can be eliminated. Of course, it is understood that tbe turkeys must have free range where there is plenty of greed feed. About a month beCcre the turkeys ' are to be marketed, start dampening their mash with milk, thus getting them ink the habit of eating it gradually. During the last 10 or 12 days the turkeys should be kept from running'the range too much by feeding them all they will consume of damp mash, three of four times a day. Just the amount that they will clean np in about 30 minutes. Tbe last feed at night should be whole grain, all they will eat.- A large per cent of the grain feed should consist of cord. If this method Is used carefully the turkeys will be In an excellent condition and bring the highest price. Don't try to market the small, skinny turkeys, they bring a low price and are the very hardest to sell even at a very low price. Feed them well until they are.
