Mr. Monson and Mr. Clegg report that remarkable gains are being made by lambs, some of them only 3 months old weighing 100 pounds. Several of the young sheepmen say they will have lambs at the show weighing 150 pounds. The Payson show is to be held just prior to the national ram sale in Salt Lake City in August, and each member of the boys club is preparing his flock for the exhibit. More than 100 head of purebred Hampshires will be entered in the show, which will be attended by J. H. Manderfield of the Union stock-yard- s and others from Salt Lake. Substantial donations in prize money are in prospect and merchandise prizes are being offered by Payson firms. PAYSON, June 15. Several Methods of Treating Seed Have Been Tried. Potato scab, black scurf, and black leg cause a tremendous annual loss to the potato growers. As a result of this serious loss several methods have been tried and found to be successful, but the method which is taking best In the regions is the hot potato-growin- nt . Roosevelt, Utah s., TO PREVENT MILK IEVER Though most dairymen are familiar with the successful air treatment for inflating udders of dairy cows to prevent fatal consequences from milk fever, a simple method for preventing the disease is not so well known. Use of improved strains of corn Is a big factor in efficient and profitable corn production, for when such strains are used more bushels of corn can be grown with the same capital and labor, thus lowering the cost per bushel and swelling the growers profits, C. M. Woodworth, chief of plant breeding at the college of agriculture, University of Illinois, points out. The discovery of disease-resistastrains Is the only permanent means of control of plant diseases. The growing of such resistant strains not only reduces losses from the diseases themselves, but also entails no cost for material and labor in seed treatment. The same holds true for strains resistant to insect attacks. There is an added advantage from the standpoint Resistant of quality of product. strains produce more sound grain than susceptible strains, and there Is often a premium in price on this account. Harvesting and threshing costs are high. How may they be reduced? Types that stand erect throughout the hanest period are to be preferred because practically all the grain can be gathered with less trouble, expense and loss of grain. In corn, this is probably more Important than for other grain crops, particularly when harvesting machinery is used. On account of increasing labor costs more dependence is being placed on machinery. Improved strains may be said, in general, to make the wider use of machinery possible and practicable, and hence from this standpoint, also, they constitute a factor in efficient production. method.
