Two days were spent in making surveys of fields in the vicinity of Roosevelt, Myton and Fort Duchesne and in gathering data which will serve as a basis for a more detailed and extensive survey later. Dr. Wildermuth reports that the Chalcis fly is a serious pest wherever seed is grown, and that so far very little is known about proper They methods for controlling it have discovered 11 species of insects which are parasitic upon the Chalcis fly and these assist greatly in keeping damaging work within present bounds. While here, these men informed us that the worms or larvae which are damaging the alfalfa in the vicinity of Ioka is the Alfalfa Loop-e- r. This insect belongs to the same family and is very closely related to the cutworm and armyworm, hence its close resemblance to them. The Alfalfa Looper only occasionally becomes damaging, and Dr. Wildermuth expressed it as his opinion that, although the pest may damage the fields already infested, the chances of it spreading and doing very much damage in other fields are not very great. But, however, he stated that very often the unexpected happens. The work of studying the Chalcis fly problem in the Basin will be continued by the alfalfa seed experiment farm, and be directed by Mr. Hawley. Roosevelt Standard. , i Industrial Convention at" which convention delegates and officers from all of the various game clubs of the Basin will meet in conference to for. ormulate plans for a Basin-wid- e of conservation the for ganization fish and game. Every sporting and game conservation, interest will be represented. It has been suggested that each organization, by representatives will form a committee to select the best places for the planting of the con- -' templated elk herd and also other features of interest to the entire Basin. This is only one of the suggested features that is to be brought out. PHEASANTS FOR BASIN WILL BE DISPLAYED DURING CONVENTION Madsen, state fish and, game has promised that commissioner, 400 pheasants will be brought to the Basin and will be on display at soma time during the U. B. I. C. Mr. Madsen did not know at just what time they would be there. The pheasants are from the Springville hatchery and are about 4 months old, fully capable of taking care of themselves when turned loose. The pheasants will be divid-- I ed equally between Duchesne and Uintah counties and will be distri-- ! butted by the various sportsmens clubs. This will be the largest num- -, her yet delivered to the Uintah Ba-- l sin. D. H. i j ; j NEED THE PAPER We need the subscription to THE UINTAH BE SURE to register at the U.
