For a couple of weeks the plan has been hatching, but owing to the fairness and sease of justice of Mayor frusit has been Morris, trated. The mayor, very much to his credit, resisted very strong pressure that was put upon him to acquiesce in the scheme. The grounds upon which Mr. Lynch was to, be removed were that he was using his office in behalf of John C. Cutler, the llepublican nominee for governor, who is Mr. The charge Lynchs brother-in-laChief against Lynch had no foundation whatever and was trumped up in its entirety. A number of those who are conducting the Democratic campaign labored with members of the city council and succeeded in getting four Democrats and four Republicans to agree to sustain the proposition for the removal of Chief Lynch, but in the mayor they met a stumbling block. His honor absolutely and positively refused to remove the chief, knowing as he did that the charges were fictitious and that the chief has attended to the duties of his office thoroughly and conscientiously as a public official should without regard to political affiliations. The Republicans wly? agreed to the removal of the chief (himself a Republican) were Black, A. J. Davis, Martin and Hobday, all Kearns heelers. The Democratic quartette, which went in on the scheme was composed of Hartenstein, E. II. Davis, Femstrom and Barnes. Tuddenham and Wells, the two sensible Democrats in the council, refused to have anything to do with the proposed job. Since Mr. Lynch has been chief of police there has been more harmony in the department than for many years. The meu work together with good will and there are no bickerings or jealousies. Politics are completely banished from the department. Mayor Morris recognized those facts and did well in pursuing the course he did. Truth is pleased to commend him for it. w. & Pmce' 22, 1904. & Salt Lake City, Utah, October 19, 1904. Editor Truth: Hearing from a number of my friends that I had joined the new or American party, I wish you would say for me, I do not belong to the American Party of Utah. I have not joined, neither have I nor will I affiliate with it. Some of my good old friends have. But long before party lines were drawn and while a Liberal before the Liberal party was so named and after its formal disbandment, I was a Republican, am yet and always will be. I have never seen the wisdom, manliness or good politics in disappointed aspirants for office bolt 5 Cents ing their party because they were defeated, much less can I endure tho treachery of a bolter who bolts 'to give aid and comfort to the enemy, the opposite party. I believe the formation of tho new party inopportune and founded in spite and disappointed ambition, and foreign to the spirit of the old Liberal party. I understand A. T. Sutherland is published as having signed the roll of the American party of Utah, and my friends have thought it to be I. My initials are A. G.f no A. T. l am the father of George Sutherland; shall stand with my party and vote the Republican ticket from Theodore Roosevelt throughout. Very truly, A. G. SUTHERALAND, & The American party, to use a hackneyed phrase, is rapidly sinking into a state of noxious desuitude. Interest in it has been decreasing for three weeks, until it has almost become a dead one. The fiction which appears in the Tribune is the only evidence that it is in existence. .The people have become pretty well informed of the real object of the creation of The party and can neither approve of it or support it. j The Tribunes stock phrase subsidized weeklies Is getting pretty stale. So far as Truth is concerned, its great fault in the eyes of the Tribune is that it would not be subsidized. The Kearns gang made may efforts to subsidize it, but without success. Joe Lippman thinks that any one who wont sell out to him and his gang must be very corrupt. The Tribunes cry about Truth being subsidized is on a par with its church influence slogan. Kearns tried to get church influence and because he didnt succeed, started his little squirt gun war on the Mormon church. J vtf The Young Mens Republican club gave another smoker Friday evening. Good music, cigars, sandwiches, coffee and good speeches were the features. The club is awake and is lively and active. Go it, boys. 3 The insincerity of the K. K. party is further exemplified by the fact that it ha.i on the ticket which will be put before the voters in a couple of weeks, at least one polygamist. The K. K. party purports to have been organized for principles sake, to fight Mormon church influence in state affairs, to fight and exterminate polygamy and all that sort of thing, notwithstanding which it nominates as one of its candidates for the lower house of the legisman at who lature a has least two wives, which is a matter of public notoriety, He was put on |
