Show cl j Vol. 4; No. 16. SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, OCTOBER Democratic-- " American Deal. Some days ago Truth published the ty in this respect are in sympathy with the Democrats. Senator Cannon for fact, and it is a fact, that Cannon deserted the Democratic par- months has been a defender of Kearns, ex-Senat- or ty and joined the new American aggregation of soreheads in accordance with an arrangement made between Senator Cannon and the American party leaders as parties of the first part and the Democratic national committee as party of the second part. The publication of that fact greatly annoyed the Tribune, the K. K. organ, the Herald, assistant K. K. organ and organ, Mr. Cannon and a few of the leading Democrats. They lashed themselves into fury and the foam was scattered far and wide. The two organs and the senator came out with denials and abuse of State Chairman Spry of the Republican committee. Statements purporting to be made by Mr. Bamberger, Democratic state chairman, and Mr. Peery, Democratic national committeeman, were also published, but the statements of those gentlemen as published denied nothing except, that they were parties to the deal. That such a deal was made Truth is in a position to state positively, and does so right now. The deal was not made direct with the national Democratic committee. It was made by Senator Gorman beand on William Sheehan half of the national Democratic committee. There is the technicality upon which the organs base their denials. Truth did not get its original information on this matter from Chairman Mr. did Neither Spry. us Spry furnish with the fact that the deal was made through Gorman and Sheehan when Senator Cannon was in the east recently. The wrath of the organs hurled against Mr. Spry and their attempts to father the statement on him were entirely misdirected. The Tribune may go into spasms in making denials, the Herald may rant and rave, and Mr. Cannon may belch forth denials until he is black in the face. We know whereof we speak and we know that the nefarious deal was made as we have stated. dt The inducement for the Democratic national committee to make such a deal is evident. The only hope of the Democrats to defeat President Roosevelt in this state is in the American party. Their plain course, like that of the local Democracy, is to aid and abet the new party, in the hope that it will draw Republican votes away from the regular Republican ticket. Kearns and the leaders of the new par quasi-Democrat- ic J f S' ss the originator and the head and front of the American party. All his efforts were in that direction even when he was still within the Democratic ranks. It was decided that Mr. Cannon could be of more service to the Americans and more effectually aid Mr. Kearns in getting his revenge on the Republicans by joining the American party than by remaining even nominally a Democrat. Mr. Cannon, for some considerations was induced to play the part of a certain man in holy writ who lived in the time of Christ and who came to a bad end. After Mr. Cannon had consummated the deal with the Democratic national committee, he telegraphed- - the American party leaders here that he was with them and about the same time or a little after he telegraphed the Democrats of Utah to get together and stay together. The K. K. party here had two objects in getting Cannon to join them in a dramatic and spectacular way, the Republican first, to defeat to increase second ticket, and sentiment in the east and strengthen the opposition to Senator Smoot keeping his seat in the United States senate. Cannon, it was thought, would be a great card. He is a Mormon of a most distinguished family and parentage, an effective and dramatic speaker who could be used efin the campaign. His talk in the theatre on the occasion of the American partys county convention k and gave the party. a decided disgusted decent and real Republicans with the movement, the main object of which, the defeat of Roosevelt and Fairbanks, Mr. Cannon made very evident. This speech was the natural and arplanned result of Mr. Cannons narangement with the Democratic tional leaders to hurt the Republican ticket here by making it appear that President Roosevelt is in league with the Mormon church. Here is what Mr. Cannon said in order to estrange Republicans from their party and, prevent them from voting the Republican set-bac- hl fall Most of you are Republican in national noli tics. That man was a senator of. the United States, and he received a promise which was sufficient for him. It applied not only to Utah, but it applied to the surrounding states ; for, strange to say, it is not national necessary for the Republican committee to send any ' emissary to Wyoming or to Idaho or to Colorado, but only to Salt Lake City, to get all of this kind of ecclesiastical influence in all of these states. But the west was overwhelmingly in favor of free silver that the goods could not be delivered. The majority of the Democratic party in this state was 51,000 that year. But in 1900 an emissary from the Republican national committee came to Salt Lake City to renew the bargain. He did renew it. He promised on the part of the Republican national party that it would do all in its power to prevent the passage of certain legislation in congress, provided the political goods were delivered in Utah and thp surrounding states Shame, that it should have Linparty of coln to make such a bargain as that! No wonder you Republicans want to leave it and join the American party. Come out of it, Republicans; partake not of its sin, and share not in its plague. For this question is coming back to vex the Republican party and it will have to account for the bargain made at Salt home! Lake City. This self same year an emissary of the Republican party has been here. (A voice, Give the Democrats a shot,) Why my friend the Democratic party has already been shot to pieces, at church dictation. When it gets big enough and strong enough, if it then makes bargains, we will give it a shot I say to you that this very spring and summer that nefarious bargain has been renewed. It started in Washington in the winter. The president of the United States wanted a Roosevelt delegation sent to Chicago; and as at that time the great Mark Hanna was alive he was fearful that Senator Kearns might take a Hanna delegation to Chicago. A bargain was made by which the Smoot investigation was to be postponed if Smoot would take a Roosevelt delegation to Chicago. Yes, it is true. Senator Smoot did take a Roosevelt delegation to Chicago. The investigation did not take place in Salt Lake. Another Republican emissary came here thid summer. He wanted the electoral vote, of Utah and the electoral vote of the surrounding states. We may not know what favor he promised, but, judging from the shrewdness which has heretofore been manifested, it is not likely that the electoral vote will be delivered unless there is something substantial given in return." Now, Senator Cannon, there is not one word of truth in all that talk 5 Cents about deals made by the Republican national party aiid nobody knows it better than you. It was only such talk as you were expected by your masters to make. J& Ji Senator Now, Cannon, we are going to say a few things, unpleasant things, and it pains us to say them about you. It does not look well for you to be raving and ranting against church in- fluence. There is- less church influence in Utah today than at any time in the history of the state, or territory and there is less church influence in Utah today than in any other state in this Union. It looks bad for YOU to be denouncing church influence. Who in all Utah received more church influence in years go.ne by? Who in all Utah, with, perhaps the exception of Senator Kearns, the head of your American party, bought it more diligently? Do you remember the time, Senator Cannon, that you stumped the state of Utah with a recommend from Bishop Stevens in your pocket which you showed to parties where you thought it would do you the most good? Do you remember the time, Senator Cannon, when your use of church influence was so brazen and persistent that the Gentile companions who accompanied you on your stumping tour refused to continue with you? Do you remember the church influence by which you were elected United States senator? Do you remember the lack of church influence which caused You may you to fail of have forgotten all about these things, but the people havent.
