Show Vol. LOCAL POLITICS The conventions, Republican and Democratic, will have been held and the nominations made before another issue1 of Truth appears. According to its custom. Truth offers a forecast ot the result of the conventions. In the past this paper has been eminently correct in its prognostications, which are always based on the best judgment of the editor, free from partisan emotions or bias of any kind, the only desire being to read the signs of the times as correctly as possible. So The Republican ticket, here goes. Truth7 thinks, will be as follows: . Mayor W. P. James. Attorney W. R. Hutchinson. Recorder A. P. Kesler. Treasurer Joseph P. Macknight. Auditor Harry Jenkins. First Precinct Councilmen F. H. Hewlett, J. J. Thomas, Lewis B. Moore or Joseph Christensen. Precinct Councilmen L. Second - J. H. Preece, M. Wood, B. J Eard-ley- . T ; Third Precinct T. A. Callister, win J. Parry, D. L. Davis, or Jim Has-la- Edm. Fourth Precinct W. C. Spence, John Sharpe, Jr-- , W.S. Higham, or T. ' per to fight its battle, and in having the , no candidates anxious to serve . was people, considerable animation manifested. , The several precincfts were all represented. Martin Mulvey and C. P. Overfield were there from the Fifth; Morris Sommer gallantly upheld the. dignity, of the Democracy of the Fourth; Eli A. Folland, D. O. Willey, Jr.f and R. W. Haslam represented, the Third; Ben D. Luce, L. C. Johnson and G. M. Jackson were there from the Second; John Mont: gomery, Jr., and John Halvorsen represented the First, while Secretary Collett acted with his usual urbanity and ability. Contrary to general expectation, the precinct chairman reported that they had secured nearly all places necessary for the holding of district primaries and the precinct conventions and each declared he would have his list all ready for insertion in the Sunday morning papers. Another surprise was in the statement that the members of the party all over the city are exhibiting- signs of life and are demanding that the boys get a move on and give them a ticket to vote. for. The reports on this subject were of ' a most cheering character and the members of the committee felt very- good after the same were made. - . : A; HarpeA Price SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, OCTOBER 10, 1903. 3, Mo. 5. Fifth Precifact T. R. Black, A. J. Davis, C. 'M.;Neuhausen. To size iup. the Democratic situation and. forecast with any degree of certainty; is much, more difficult for the simple reason. that there are practically no candidates for any offices but for councilmen from the Third precinct. It. seems that, the nominations will have to be forced on the others. That, the Democratic convention will thrust; the nominations on good men but men who. really dont want the offices, there is little doubt. They will probably accept them, as many Democrats say, because there is little chance of their being elected. That, however, is mainly ; because the Democrats lack courage and, according to their own statements, will make little or no effort to carry1 the election. Its a craven attitude. The Democrats, on account of the dissentions by which the Republican party is rent, have a good fighting chance, but we suppose the old adage still holds good, that the Democrats may be depended i do ' the to upon right thing at the wrong time. For ,r Mayor John Dem, E . A, Wall or R.. P. Morris. , For City Attorney C. S. Varian. For Recorder Eli A. Folland. For Treasurer No selection. For Auditor Ben D. Luce. The Democratic, city committee held a meeting at the office of Ben D. Luce on Wednesday evening last, at which measures were taken looking toward the .holding of the city and precinct conventions. Notwithstanding the discouragements the party has to encounter in not having a newspa . - -- : , -- . ! -- . . j jf While the meeting was hield to listen to reports of. the committee on arrangements, which were necessarily brief; consisting of the statement that the Grand Opera house had been engaged for the convention and Helds band would furnish' the music, other affairs were discussed and action taken on various matters. For instance, John Halvorsen was elected treasurer. The members discussed, informally, the qualifications of various candidates for mayor. - John Dern was talked about in a very flattering way. Mr. Dern would have been delighted, had he been in a position to listen, at learning what a great and good man he is and how well he stands with the boys. It would have pleased him to know how great a man he is in the matter of running n city like this. Because the committee was unanimous in declaring that he was just the right kind of a man to take the wheel on the ship of state and pilot the old bark into port. Some One suggested that Mr. Dern would not run, and then the boys talked about the superior abilities of Colonel Wall for the place. Colonel Wall will be pleased to read in his Truth today that he is a man of the hour; just the person the city has been, yearning for. Truth informs Colonel Wall in confidence, of course, that if he wants the nomination all he has to do is to say so and its hisn. Dick Morris was also suggested, but it- was thought best to let him rest for a while and see what will turn up. - , For city attorney the name of 5 Cents. the other day and in the course of C. S. conversation asked ' the candidate a few leading Varian was suggested by every one at once. The inability of the present city and county attorneys was mentioned and the superior ability of Mr. Varian strongly contrasted. Truth will state to Mr. Varian that lie is it if he will only say the world. That he can have the nomination with va whoop and a whirl. That the mention of his name means a nomination. That the man who gets the floor to present it will receive an ovation. For recorder no name was discussed. But inasmuch as Truth last week suggested the name of Eli A. Folland, it may be said that he stands as good a show as any man running. In fact, no other man has been men. tioned for the place. For auditor no one was talked of. mayoralty qeustlons, which, with his answers, are as fol- lows: it is being told that you Mr. Odell, are a Kearns candidate and tied up with What have you to say? Further, I am not tied up or pledged to any man or any office, and if elected I shall be absolutely free to do what I think is for the best interests of the city in every way. If elected, what would be your attitude toward the sporting element? I recognize the fact that in a city as large as Salt Lake it is impossible But Truth has nominated Ben D. to suppress the gambling and sporting Luce for the place on the part of the element, and experience shows that Democrats and while Truth is not a the best and most effective way to Democratic paper, it looks as if in deal with it is not by spasmodic atthe distribution of the pie, Ben wili tempts to absolutely suppress it, but stand a good show. by establishing and enforcing strict The treasurership lacks candidates, police supervision and control, and but in the. event John Dern is nomin- that is what I should do.
