That the strike may prove permanent is not improbable, as such discoveries are characteristic of that region, the O. K. and Old Hickory properties being notable examples of large bodies of good values near the surface. Jl Jl It is announced from the east that the Newhouse Mines & Smelter company has been organized for the purpose of acquiring and operating the Cactus and other properties owned by Mr. Samuel Newhouse near Frisco, in Beaver county, and upon which extensive development has been done within the past year. The company Is capitalized at 86,000,000, and bonds for 81.000,000, running ten years, will be issued. Mr. Newhouse takes one-hathis amount and there has been demand from capitalists both in this country and abroad for a much larger sum than the remaining 8500,000. The plan of the company is to erect a concentrating plant, a smelter and a series of brick cottages for workingmen and other buildings on the companys townsite in the Wah Wah valley, near the Cactus grounds. The new mining and smelting town will be supplied with water by pipe line and a branch road will be constructed from Frisco. The Cactus has been opened to a depth of 600 feet, and over 2,000,000 tons of ore are now blocked out, and this vast tonnage averages better than 5 per cent copper and carries moderate values in stuff carsilver and gold. High-grad- e 25 cent and other copper per rying values in proportion is of frequent occurrence, and the entire body contains an excess of iron. For the economic transportation of these bodies from the mine to the mill and smelter a tunnel 5,800 feet, or considerably more than a mile in length, is being drivem It is already completed a distance of 1,000 feet, and is being pushed at the rate of from 25 to 40 feet a day by three shifts. It is also announced that George K. Fischer, who had the construction of the Highland Boy, and the United States smelters, will superintend the Cactus plant. The Indications ara indeed fa ining a property in the capacity of mining engineer for eastern clients. jl jl Crbwther of the Blue Henry Acre has gone to St. Louis to consult with eastern associates w'ho desire his services in examining a gold property in southern California. M. Jt Jl A remarkable strike of seven feet of ore has been encountered in the Blue Jay group, owned by Jack Skewes of Salt Lake and situated near Moab in Grand county. The find was made at a depth of only ninety feet, and numerous samples have disclosed average values measured by 25 per cent copper. This property is an extension of the Big Indian group, in which Mr. Skewes is largely interested. The find is considered important, not only on account of the high grade of the ore, but that it proves a large territory of continuous mineralization. In the Big Indian large bodies of copper has been found and for reduction of which preparations the are being made. Jl Jl uic ocinuay iJiuperijr, in tne Henry mining district, In Sevier county, important disclosures are resulting with the resumption of work, after the inaction caused by severe weather during the winter months. The shaft at a depth of twenty feet in a well defined fissure, has encountered ore that carries as much as 830 to the ton in gold. At the surface the ledge was only four feet wide, but with depth it has increased to ten feet between walls, with feeders of fine quartz dipping In from both sides. This property is near the B. W. & H., from which good results are being obtained. low-grad- e Jl Jl At the Lower Mammoth at Tintic ore is being taken In moderate amounts from the 1.100-foo- t level that contains from 300 to 1.000 ounces of silver to the ton, and assays from picked samples have disclosed as much as 14,000 ounces to the ton. It is being sacked for shipment, and a consignment that will' yield a large return is promised. THE SHORTEST AND FASTEST LINE TO ALL PRINCIPAL UTAH POINTS Jl Jl A contract for 300 lf feet of work in the Iris property, in Lincoln county, Nevada, has been let by Manager Grant H. Smith. The main shaft is now down 120 feet, and drifts are being run both north and south on the vein at the level. An ore body has been encountered that is four feet thick and carries 812 in gold to the ton. The ore is free milling, and when the present contract is completed it is estimated that a sufficient quantity will be exposed to insure the success of the mine. 100-fo- THE SHORT LINE TO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST.
