Show 10 TRUTH. Political Melange. As was expected, Senator Reed Smoot has been admitted to the body to which he was elected, has taken the oath of office and is now a full fledged member of the United States senate. All proceedings looking toward unseating him will be deferred until the senate meets in regular session next December and by that time there will b nothing to the charges which have been preferred against him. This is in line with the predictions which have been made by this paper. Truth has contended that there was no reason why Smoot should not take his seat and keep it and it is very probable that the senate of the United States will not permit him to leave until he either resigns of his own volition, or serves out his term. Fending the convening of the senate in regular session it is quite likely that the Ministerial association will make some efforts toward securing some evidence to present to the committee on privileges and elections bearing on the case, but there is not much likelihood of its getting anything in addition to the matter already filed. Jit jt Horace Smith, clerk of the board of health, has proven himself to be a very efficient, conscientious, painstaking public servant. He has made many and in some cases radical improvements in the system of keeping the records, and has thereby Imposed on himself much additional work. The salary attached to the position is only $75 a month, while in other cities of about the same size and importance as -- Salt Lake the clerk of the health board receives $125 a month, and in some cases is given an assistant. Public employes should be given fair wages and efficiency and faithfulness should be insisted upon. Mr. Smiths salary should be advanced to $100 a month at least. i1? For President: Alton B. Parker, of New York; for Vice President, Carter Harrison, of Illinois; Platform Tariff Reform. Turn the Rascals Out, and a few other things. That is the programme of the Democratic leaders in the east, led by Grover Cleveland, Olney and Whitney, and which will be carried out at the next national Democratic convention. They dont care a continental whether they carry a state west of the Mississippi river or not They are going after New York, New Jersey, Indiana, possibly Connecticut, and once more the Solid South, with a fighting chance in Illinois. They are going to try to get Roosevelts scalp on election day. The south will be solid as it never was before. The old ragged garment with Negro Domination written thereon will be shaken in front of every white voter south of Mason and Dixons line, and the south will come in. Booker Washingtons dinner with the president; the appointment of Crum to be collector of the port of Charleston; the postmistress at Indianola, Miss., and there you have it. The south will need no other issue. In the Empire state the bankers on the street will be for Parker, because they know him to be of the Cleveland stripe and safe. No matter what we think of the stuffed prophet out here, down in the east he is regarded as safe. Come to think it all over, had the hosts of Democracy followed old Cleveland the party would have been in power yet. We would have had the gold standard, business would have revived just the same, and the Democracy would have received the credit for it. But they didnt do it. Parker is regarded as a conservative man, who understands the business situation. To be candid Wall street mistrusts Roosevelt. They think he is too radical. His action in compelling the railroads to arbitrate their differences with the miners; his position on the trusts has scared them not a little. They do not know when he will break out again. Just now the claw is beneath the velvet, but they fear that after election, if he should be successful, he might disturb conditions. . J j The finances of this country are not yet in good shape by a long shot Our currency Isnt elastic enough, so they tell us. A layman would understand that to mean that there are times when we cannot stretch a dollar far enough, but, as a matter of fact, it means that we have not money enough to carry on ine business of the country. There are twelve billions of dollars worth of securities floating around and about two billions in money to carry them with. Of course thats figuratively speaking. So the bankers want a circulating medium that in times of money distress they can expand and prevent panics, while in good times they can contract it. to meet normal conditions.- That was the reason the Fowler bill was introduced. So long as this money question stands in an unsettled condition, so long the moneyed men are going to fight shy of a man like Roosevelt, who will go ahead and do what he thinks is right without fear of consequences. Wall street dont want a man who would rather be right than be president. Not by a darn sight. What Wall street wants is a man who will keep his finger on Wall streets when things go wrong will pulse and ' doctor Wall street and to the devil with the balance of the country. Wall street has no patriots. You will find them on the farms up country. - Jt J The rank and file in the great city and in the other great cites want a chance at the pie counted. Thats all. Tammany is tired of remaining on the outside so long. The tiger is hungry. The organized Democracy in other towns is also hungry, and when the ime comes they will go in with a dash and a roar and fur will fly. Dont let he idea ever creep into your head that he Democracy is dead. It isnt. The lepublicans will know next time they have been in a fight Republican speakers will not be able to go out on the stump one year from this fall and shout Populism. Nit. The platform will no doubt declare for the gold standard, Bryan and all his predictions to the contrary notwithstanding. It will contain a plank declaring for the regulation of the great combinations; not their destruction, and if the right men are nominated, there will be the finest scrimmage the country has seen Cleveland when since the days trimmed Harrison. J! J! What of Bryan? Why, he still has that farm near Lincoln, and it is understood he has its virgin soil pretty nearly subdued. Bryan will not cut any ice when the convention meets, unless he acquiesces with the others. The day is past when Mr. Bryan can draw be- hind him enough of the Democratic party to work any harm. Bryan had best clamber on the band wagon and grab a drum stick. Talk about Biyan bolting! Where could he get his followers? From New York? Not by any means. From Utah? Suppose he did. They are not going to pay much attention to Utah, to Idaho, to Montana, to Oregon, to Washington or to any of the small western states. They are going in to elect a president. Civil service reform be hanged. Turn the rascals out It will be 1884 over again, and Lord how the combat will rage when Arthur they get started. Whisper. to be the next Pue Gorman is going national Democratic chairman of the committee. There is a foe worthy of Hannas steel. There is a man calculated to make our own dearly beloved Perry S.
