Show TRUTH. OGDEN LETTER. Ogden, August 22. The event of the week has been the regaining of control of the Standard by Bill. Once more the paper is run by Bill and his man Fridays name no longer adorns the head of the editorial column as it. By a series of bluffs, one of which was to start a morning newspaper, Bill has bulldozed the other stockholders into letting go for almost nothing, and now has the paper all to himself, answerable to no one but himself, and will run it to suit himself and in no interest but that Bill had a hard time putof himself. ting up this job and carrying it through, but he made it, and today the Standard stands a living monument to his indusand try as a man of action patience In future the conscience. flexibility of save no will have political policy paper that of its editor and manager and will declare for no man or no interests until thoe men or interests have been seen and labored with. In the days to come people who know Bill can determine the measure of his success by the amount of space he dispenses. If the other fellow gives up liberally he will be cordially supported; if he doesnt he will be ignored. ft ft Bill has given up all hope of going to the Republican state convention, al" though there is some talk of letting him break in on a proxy, just to see if he wiil remain true to those who have made arrangements with him, but the truth of the matter is that he and his gang are shut out. Not one of them will see the inside of the convention hall, except'by sufferance, or as visitors. This makes Bill hot. tie has raged around and snorted and pawed the air, ever since he heard the glad tidings. If he had had any hair he would have torn it, but Bills hair is, all gone. So he has to content himself with other exercises. Ilanson, Murphy, et al, went after his scalp and they got it. Bill is a dead one politically. ft ft the banners was water. The overburdened taxpayers clamored for nothing but water Bill promised them water. He predicted that when he should be elected, water would llow in the streets; that water would deluge the lawns; that the little children could sail their tiny craft in the irrigation ditches and every resident could have his private fishpond, so plenty would water become. Bill was elected. He hired three attorneys, one a Democrat, an unpardonable sin on Bills part, to look the condemnation matter up. They unanimously agreed that the city could not condemn the water works; that it would require a special act of the state legislature, and even then the matter would be in doubt. So the battle cry of water was stopped right there and Bill and his cohorts started on a campaign of economy. ft ft l Such a campaign as it has been has vetoed three or four accounts of $2.50 each and one of $1.30 and four or five of $3.75. The council promptly overrides them and we have the spectacle of expenses going on, with no one to check them and no effort made to save the coin of the taxpayers. Not only that, but the law is being constantly violated and several members of the council and Bill himself, might get into trouble, had any one here the stamina to put a stop to the wanton infractions which are daily taking place. For instance: Councilman Carr runs a drug store. The city needs drugs once in a while. Although it is against the law, Councilman Carr supplies them at his own prices and the city pays the bill. The city needs ihe harness of the fire department repaired or replaced. Councilman Cross does it and votes to pay himself for the cost. The city has to publish notices of intention, resolutions and ordinances. Bill prints them and signs the bills he sends in. It is of no use to say that Bill hasnt been in control of the Standard for some time, for that is no excuse His man Friday Chambers, councilman, has, and the notices went in the paper just the same. All this gentle reader is contrary to the statute. If the other paper; the weekly, printed here, would get action, lay the matter before the county attorney, instead of printing all the drivel written by some fellow who dares not sign his name, he might accomplish some good. But like the balance of the people of this city and Utah generally, the editor seems to delight in being humbuggejd and seeing others humbugged and letting it go at too-Bil- Bill was full of promises before the election which landed him in the mayor's chair. As is well known the battle was made on the waterworks issue. William inspired the Republicans to issue a platform in which it was de dared that if he and the balance of the candidates were elected, the mayor and council proposed to condemn the sys- that. ft ft tem, owned by Messrs. He sought to placate them by stating he would pay the hackman out of his own pocket, but that didnt go. Thev gave him to understand that when he had a patient to send to the infirmary he must get an order from the county physician and that he was not running Weber county, even if he was making a bluff at managing all the affairs of Ogden City. This man was suffering from a contagious disease and was likely to carry the infection to the institution and the indiscriminate admission of patients on Bills order was not to be tolerated. It is thought Bill will be more careful in the future. ft ft Sutherland will carry this county three to one, so far as getting the delegates to the state convention is con- cerned. His forces are well organized, while those of the opposition are all shot to pieces. Bill has made strenuous efforts to get his men in line, but. his old friends have deserted him and even had Kearns any considerable support here, it would not come out to help him because of Bill. Bill is a dead weight which Kearns is carrying and the quicker Joe Lippman comes up here and gets in touch with conditions, the better it will be for him. ft'ft Of late there has been a great deal brated smallpox case. There is more real sport in watching a man push his bicycle without the assistance of artificial means, anyhow. ft ft Calders Park is making great preparations for Labor day. Mr. Levy has always provided an unusual program on Labor days and the coming one will be no exception. A number of fast hones have been entered for the races, which it is promised will be the biggest event seen for some time. ft ft Saltair is arranging a big program for Labor day, and everybody who visits the big pavilion may feel assured of a time. of talk about Bill selling out to the having good ft ft Democrats.
