Heath at least had the manhood to fight Smoot in the editorial columns. One would think from reading the interviews and quotations published in the Tribune that Cutler was an obscure individual. While he may not be as well known among some of the politicians as are the other candidates, it is only justice to him to say that he is one of the most successful and best known business men of the state. He is a champion of home industry, and has done as much as any man that can be named in building up and fostering the. home industrial institutions of this state. Mr. Cutler is a superior man, ' and there is no doubt he would fill the office of governor with dignity and ability. Truth is not espousing the cause of Mr. Cutler. It is merely unmasking the covert attacks made on him by Senator Kearns. While the latter is not fighting openly himself,- he is having his henchmen do all in their thinking power to defeat Cutler, thereby to cast a stigma upon Senator Smoot. TICKBT OPPICB. ALT LAKU CITY. UTAH. Both Kearns organs have had a great deal to say in the matter of the dispute between Postmaster Clove, of Provo, and Justice McCarty of the Supreme court in relation to some money sent down Richfield way when McCarty was a candidate. It is alleged that during a tour through Sevier county Clove asked some of the boys down there if they were going to let McCarty sell them out to Kearns. and although this assertion is claimed ' to have been a pleasantry on the part of the Provo postmaster, the Kearns crowd take it to heart so badly and jump on Clove so hard that it looks as if there might be a nigger in the woodpile somewhere. McCarty does not mend matters a bit by a letter defending his wounded dignity, ,for he tips off the fact that Kearns and Keith contributed to the campaign fund and that the checks passed through his hands, although it is alleged that the reason for thiB was because Kearns did not know the county chairman, although it would have been mighty easy for him to have gone to Republican state headquarters, or to have telephoned there, and found out. Clove is not entirely guiltless of error in the matter, for he should have refrained from denying that he was down there in the interest of tiie faction and boldly stated his mission. It is no worse for him to get into politics than it is for - .the United States marshal and the United States attorney for this district. Clove should have said he was there on politics and asked them what they Intended doing arout it, and roasted the other fellows to a finish who have done it so much more than he. As day follows day it is developed more and more that Kearns has his hand in every part of the state attempting to debauch it. Why he should have selected McCarty, unless McCarty was a friend of his,' to distribute money for himself and his business partner is a question that no amount of evasion can answer. It is really a nasty mess. Every one who gets mixed up with Tom gets his hands tarred. McCarty has put his foot in it. He has done just exactly what Clove would have asked him to do had he been certain the justice would have done it. It was old Solomon who said: Oh, that mine en emy would write a book, or one of his distant relatives, we forget which, but McCarty in rushing off into print over a matter of this kind has neither helped himself, advanced the cause of Kearns or Injured Clove. This scheme to unify the Republican party which McCarty admits was hatched at a judiciary convention where he was nominated, was, according to McCartys statement, a Kearns scheme, the men who were asked to aid it by work and money beng known Kearns supporters with the exception of Ed Loose, who at that time was erroneously supposed to be a Kearns man. McCarty, .has been a Kearns creature ail along and by his own showing is so now. A Kearns worker on the Tribune: has stated that the "big hearted Irish miner paid McCartys campaign expenses.
