Bishop Potter, the sponsor for the theological Baloon opened in New York City a few days ago, has broken out in another place. In a page article, with illustrations, published in the Hearst papers last Sunday, he endeavors to explain why God permits disasters, such as was the burning General Slocum' of the steamer with its 900 children and some adults burned or drowned. As might have been expected, the bishop makes a sorry mess of it. In an endeavor to reconcile the statement Not a sparrow falls, etc. with the many disasters that have occurred during recent months, and more especially that steamer alwhich befell the luded to he gets into deeper water than he can swim in. He pretends to see in the death of women and innocent children a Heaven born desire for all of us to better our conditions; that God seeks such means to take us mortals to himself and that Deity allows us to go down to horrible deaths as a warning to others to be more careful. All of which labored effort at reconciling his peculiar theology with common sense makes me tired. Another argument advanced is that God does not look upon death as we do; that whereas we view a visit from the King of Shadows as a calamity, except in very rare instances, Deity marks it as an event where humans step from mortality to immortality and ergo, God is glad when he sees the souls of His children mount upwards on the smoke of the burning ill-fate- d or arise through the strangling waters with the bubbles that float on the sur- solution in the escape of the last breath from the body. Some pretend to know a great deal more than most of us, because seme pretend to be able, not only to define Deity, but to understand his moods and passions, and among this latter class is Bishop Potter. He assumes to tell us just what God was doing at the time and what He meant when he stayed His hand and permitted the innocents to die horrible deaths by fire or water on the occasion alluded to. He asserts in effect that God knew from ever- lasting to everlasting that this steamer was. going to bum and that He permitted it to bum as a sort of lesson to those of us who remain to be more careful in our picnic affairs. The writer fails to see the logic of the statement, if any logic there be. First, the horror of the affair would have been as great had 200 women and children perished, or 199, or 176, or 154. The loss of that number of innocents would have made as great an impression as the loss of 900. Then why sacrifice the extra quota, just for an object lesson? The General Slocum made many trips up the river before this sad event. It carried Tam- many politicians, ward heelers, Bowery toughs and their female companions, all the off scourings of New York humanity many times. Why not have given the object lesson referred to when the boat was weighted down with the wicked, the tough and the sinful, instead of waiting until the rotten, ill protected old hulk was filled with the young, the good, the Innocent and the beautiful? Why spare the maudlin mob going to a beer fest and slaughter a lot of Sunday school children? Why destroy the pure in heart and let the swollen faced toper escape? Why see a struggling crowd of white dressed, pretty girls and boys, gasping out their lives in the lire or the river and permit a cargo of cigarette smoking, tobacco chewing, booze guzzling rowdies go and have a good time unscathed? J & Bishop Poter holds that Infinity is endeavoring to make this world bet -- Prices run $2, $3 and $4 ORE PRICE 132 to remove the good and. remove the evil what will we unlearned and unlettered people who are trying to see the light do with such an example before us, when to be good is to court death and to be evil is to insure This clergyman Is all crossed in his wire apparatus, for he is flying to the rescue of a Being whose works are past finding out, and is getting all muddled in an effort to explain why God is doing just as Potter would if Potter were God. The writer has all the reverence for the Great One that it is possible for a man to entertain, even though he does not proclaim it perpetually from the housetops. He regards the statements made by Potter as being not only sacriligeous, but absolutely blasphemous. God had nothing to do with that disaster at all. If we stop for a moment to consider we will see that in creation there are absolute laws overning everything and that when one of those everlasting statutes are violatea the penalty follows quickly and surely. If we eat too much we suffer; if we drink too much we suffer; if we put out fingers in the fire we burn them; if we go out without clothing we chill; if we stub our toe we feel pain. If. we go down to sea in a rotten ship and encounter a gale we drown, and if we go picnicking in an unsafe boat and it catches fire as did this one, lots of us lose our lives. There is no use laying everything of this sort at the door of Deity and making Him responsible for every horrible affair W. 8. J. J. MCCORNICK. PRESIDENT 8- - DALY. VICE-PRBS- T. H. LYNCH. God has to endure everything. If lightning strikes a cow, it Is the Lord; if through the ill advised action of parents a baby dies, it is the Lord; if by exposure and a violation of the laws of Nature a beautiful young girl passes away it is the Lord who wanted her; if a carpenter neglects to put nails enough in a scaffold and It falls and he Is killed, it is the Lord; if ;a train dispatcher makes a mistake in orders and two engines come together head on, It is the Lord. And so on and so forth ad libitum, ad nauseam. God does not do this at all. He is a kind Father to us all and He leaves us to work out our destinies without interference. It is not God, but man who is the responsible being and when caught in the act he shifts the responsibility, just as old Adam did when he ate the apples. He laid it on to Eve and said she tempted him. What a cowardly creature man Is, to be sure. |
