Show TRUTH 6 CHATTER. (Being the personal opinions of the writer and for which no one else is in any manner responsible.) , It is horrible. It is unbelievable. It is almost enough to doom the Worlds Fair. If a Worlds Fair cannot be held without this holocaust of souls, then let there be no World's Fair. I would say to the young women of America; be on your. guard aiid entertain no proposals whatever coming from St. Louis, or looking St Loulsward. If any young woman, for the sake of making a livelihood, feels compelled to go to St. Louis, I would sayto her, Take with you a defender of your virtue in the form of a loaded six shooter, and if any seducing fiend, in the form of a man, attempts to bring ruin upon your life, shoot, and shoot to kill. If the shot goes straight to its mark, like a thunderbolt straight from the hand of God, I will lead in the singing of the Doxology over that shot. My fellow citizens, if this message from St. Lou(s be true, does it not darkly reflect upon American manhood? Let the manhood of America rise, and speak, and act. & H No, dearly beloved, the above does not apply to Utah; it applies to the city Of St. Louis, as indicated by the language. Of course it was an utterance from a pulpit. It seems we here in this state are not the only despoil ers of women. We may send out missionaries to "hypnotize them and convert them to Mormonism; we may be successful in securing them to embrace our creeds, but we are not meant in the above, because, according to the statements of this pastor. Rev. George Gregg of the. Lafayette avenue Presbyterian church, of Brooklyn, St. Louis has seen us and gone us one better; she proposes to buy up all the young girls between 12 and 20 years and use them for immoral purposes during the worlds fair and exposition this summer. Rev. Gregg 'very righteously, very indignantly, very emphatically, rises up on his hind legs, lifts up his voice and advocates the six shooter as a remedy for this alleged evil. & Were it not for the fact that the excellent pastor seems to have gone off half cocked on this .proposition, it would be very proper to commend him for his utterance and his advice, but inasmuch as he himself qualifies his If this assertion with the sentence: message from St. Louis be true, it is doubtless as well to investigate and see if he has reasonable excuse for his statements. It appears that on the Thursday previous to this utterance by the pastor, one Mrs. Whitte-more- , a woman evangelist, mission-ary- , reclamation agent, or something like it, made the statement that the fabulous sum of $125,000 had been raised in the city of St. Louis for the purpose of getting girls from 12 to 20 to come there during the summer, said girls to be used for immoral purposes. Mrs! Whittemore said she got her information from Rev. Ward of the Sunshine Mission of Cedar Ran-idIowa, who, in turn received his t. from some mission worker in I ouis-- , whose name is withheld. However, Rev. A. M. Campbell cf St. Loui backs up the several narratives with Our slum workers the following:on that this ere the ground, whole hell: born scheme is awfully true. The women do pot hesitate to pa to us; You would .totter let us 1 . -- s, - and-kno- . alone or ou will suffer for it. You cant get these girls now, but when the Worlds fair is over you will need e a building covering' a1 lot for rescue work. He then adds: your They are sending out agents and circulars over the' whole country promising girls good positions during the Worlds fair and good homes free. Thousands of girls as virtuous as angels are nearly crazy to come to the Worlds fair and innocently fall into a trap like this. Etc., etc. ten-acr- Now, at the risk of being classified as an man, the writer will state that he believes all this is rubbish, started by some St. Louis grafter who needs the money: The writer does not believe that the sum of $125,000 or any other sum has been anti-moralit- y expended, or will be expended, in luring girls to ruin in St. Louis, or any other city. The writer does not believe that any woman ever made such a statement as the one quoted, to any slum worker, or to any one else. If she liad the St. Louis press would have blazed with.it; .she would have been hunted out of town, driven from the precincts and marked everywhere she went. Ind addition to this, it may be stated that no manaeer of an immoral house wants an innocent girl in her house. Like, poets, harlots are born, not made. Every dive keeper in that city will be on the make durine the season, and innocent girls are not the monev makers. It Is the scarlet maiden with a record who will get the coin. The innocent girls are a source of constant, expensive annoyance. The hardened sinners know their business and are the ones desired. It is safe to assert also that out of every one hundred fallen women ninety and nine of them never cease to repent of their errors, and, too late, wish for the days of their innocence. It is safe to assert that of every one hundred abandoned women, ninety and nine of them would shield an innocent, rather than aid her to sin and become as they are. Now I make that . . statement in the face of everything that has been said, will be said, or can be said by ministers, lady lecturers, moralists of all kinds, missionaries, slum workers and what net, and I dont care a jlgeer who says to the contrary. A newsnaper experience of nearly twenty years has. shown me the seamy side of life all the way from the fashionable social evil to the pest of the pavement. Girls fall .nd go astrav. not because fallen women want them to. And no bagnio madarae in St. Louis will want for inmates during the Worlds fair to the evtent that, she will pay for getting innocent girls. Why, the rounders and the regulars will flock there in dozens, in fifties and in hundreds. Thev are saving money for railroad tickets right now. v & u BA KERN. same fashion as that conducted in this state. That some slum worker told some minister, who told some woman.'
