Lake Theatre, is in itself not enough to immortalize the names of Smith ancLe Koven, though for sometime it might succeed in rescuing them from oblivion. De Kovens music hatf established for itself its own peculiar standards by which it must be meas"Foxy Quiller, ured, while the words supplied by Smith as well as the incentive of the plot could never stand by themselves without the electrical applications so generously supplied by the composer. Dc Koven and Smith, instead of striking out boldly along original lines have preferred to feel ae pulse of the public and supply the concoction according to the condition disclosed in the examination of the patient. From a pecuniary standpoint nobody will dispute the wisdom of De Koven and Smith in thus following the fickleness of a fickle public. "Foxy Quiller" meets all the demands of present theatre-goers it is a musical mirage that is reflected from the vaporous longings of the average audience. Richard Golden as "Foxy. Quiller, is the. principal storm center of funny sayings, funny doings as well as equally funny things unsaid and undone. As the fussy detective who fails to detect, Richard Golden is the limit his complete and artistically successfully failures must appeal strongly to the local bureau for discovering crimes. Foxy Quiller was writeen to exploit the comedy eccentricities of Richard Golden who constantly struggles under the suspicion that he is the whole show, notwithstanding the program announcement that there are others. Golden, however, is one of the best comedians who' ever raised a laugh on the local stage, his mannerisms, at times, though unpleasantly insistent, yet possess all the virtue of being distinctly his own and in this sense have all the strength of origclever inality. Everybody admires the diminl-tive whose work of Adolph Zink, at attracts general personality tention. Miss Carlotta Gilman has a splendid voice which finds plenty of opportunity; her face and figure are attractive elements to which she unites The a graceful stage presence. beauas a chorus is justly heralded asseris it chorus vocally large, ty ensem tive and thoroughly trained in ble groupings. "Foxy Quiller, from first to last, fills the stage with scenic pictures, graceful animation, gorgeous costumes and a riot of bewildering colors which change with all the pleasing fickleness of dissolving rainbows. The engagement closeu with a matinee today and performance tonight. . -- It is pleasing to record that all press laudations heaped upon Mr. and Mrs. Royle were in every way de served. "Friends will bear comparison with most productions seen upon the stage and its interpretation will not suffer when measured by the accepted standards. The reuniting of the play by Mr. Royle is, perhaps, not so much a concession to a logical plot as an acknowledgment or original weakness in construction and something else. "Friends, as at first writ ten, conformed in every way to dramatic sense and propriety despite its terminating failure to meet the sen tlments of an audience. It is sometimes an actual relief to discover something which does not always weakly surrender to the commonplace. There are many good plays whose element of strength often comes from the happening of the unexpected. A case in point is Brother Officers. This play was remarkably successful both in England and America. Now if Lieutenant Hinds had succeeded in leading the "Baroness Roydon to the altar, the 1 told you so portion of the audience would have secured all the personal triumph wnich comes from successful prophecy. But the dashing young officer does not marry the titled lady and there are many good reasons draIn matic reasons why he doesnt. Friends, however, Mr. Royle soon became confronted with a condition which at first did not exist. In the light of subsequent events, however, nobody can blame Mr. Royle for changing his original manuscript so that Jack Paden, Jr., weds Miss Otto, instead of generously stepping aside for the. other "Friend. No other playwright, perhaps, nas ever possessed a better motive for rewriting his story and at the same time making the incidents of the play conform to the actual conditions which surMr. round the hero and heroine. Friends has widened his friendly circle of friendship among his local friends. Royles new The La Petite Theatre has got down to smooth sailing and has, ever since the opening, enjoyed a steadily grow lng patronage. The action of Manager Pyper in not allowing The Auctioneer to be performed Saturday evening, after an important, part of the scenery had been carted away, has received the warmest approval from the press and the theatre-goin-g public. The incident will serve notice upon future companies, which might have a tendency to cut things, that Salt Lake can not be ping ponged with in any such manner. Thanks, Mr. Pyper.
