How very foolish and inconsistent. These growlers, these would picture the men at the head of the company as tyrants, brutes, or even worse; that they do things they ought not do, and leave undone those things they ought to do out of pure, unadulterated cussedness; that they are not ordinary mortals, but fiends incarnate; fiends in whose breasts there remain net one drop of the milk ot human kindness, or any semblance of love or sympathy for humankind. I wish to correct this idea. I personally know several of these men, and anow them to be just like other men. They are no worse than the average man, and far better than some. They arc business men; men of god sense; men who love their families and neighbors much the same as other men do, and .taken altogether, I have no doubt would compare most favorably with any and all of those who essay tc abuse them. In the matter of social standing, sound morality, or Christian virtues they are as good as any, hut these qualities play no part in the operation of a street car system. Operating street cars is a business proposition, pure and simple. Street cars are run for the purpose of making money, and not for' the exploitation of Christian graces. When the good- - people of this city granted the company a franchise and turned the business of using it over to this company, it was with the implied, if not the express, understanding that the corporation was to have the unlimited control of the same; tnat the cars were to be run with the single purpose in view of making money; that the people were to accept such services as would best suit the comfort, convenience and financial Interest of the company; that no one should have any legal or mora right to interfere; that the sacred and inalienable right to kick was to be vouchsafed to all, with the understanding that their kicking should never be understood to mean anything more than to advertise the kicker as a faultfinding, grumbler. This was the tacit understanding all around, and it has been lived up to by the company in both letter and spirit, and oecause it has, there are a few, including tne editors of several newspapers, who are working themselves up to a high pitch of anger and venom, not because the company has failed to live up to the contract, but because it has. We make the statement, and no one will dare deny the allegation, or defy the "alligator, that there is not one of the horde of kickers who are hounding the company today, who would not do exactly the same thing under the same circumstances. The company is trying to make money, and that is what the lines were built for, and that is why cars run upon the line. The company is short of rolling stock, and it takes money to buy more; that is the reason more cars are not bought. A nickel earned by an open car in winter is just as good, and will fault-finder- s, sore-heade- d , $ jystem that makes such service possible. What I mean to say is that it is not the men who operate the system who are to blame for it, hut the system itself. So long as public utilities are turned over to private indito viduals, or private corporations conthe for gain, private operate ditions which now confront us will obtain. It is as natural as it is for water to seek its level. The only thing to do Is to change the systein and have our street cars operated for the purpose of hauling people, instead of making money. Eliminate the feature of profit by introducing the feature of service, and then all will be well. We will then have open cars in summer and closed cars in winter. We will then have cars where we want them, and when we want them. The track will belong to the community ; the cars will he run by the community, and for the accommodation of the people of the community. The question will then no longer be: How much money can we make? but how many people can we haul? Politically speaking, these kickers are getting just exactly, what they have been voting for all their 'ives. At every election they have said Miat they like the system. Out of the 35,000 voters in Utah at the last election, 82,000 of them declared by their ballots that they like open cars in winter and closed cars In summer. A pitiful 3,000 dared to say at the polls that they do not like it, and that they want the system changed. All the rest of the Utah voters said: We like it. Well, they are getting it, and I am glad ot it.
