There were apparently years of usefueness ahead of him and hid he lived for no other purpose than so continue his pleasant ways with his fellow men his life would have been of more service to humanity in general than dozens of certain kinds of men who will live on, and on, blighting the hopes and adding to the burdens of others whenever chance presents itself. George bad only begun to live when the summons reached him. Carters new play, Two Little Waifs, will receive its first Salt Lake production at the Grand Theatre. The play turns upon an unfortunaiemi3iake made by a husband'in regard to his wife. The wife it appears has a twin sister, an adven turess, who so closely resembles her that the husband, discovering the adventuress in the garden with a strange man, makes the unhappy error of concluding that his wife is false. After a quarrel, in which the misjudged wife vainly protests her innocence, the hus- -' band leaves in a passion. During the separation husband and wife undergo many trials, the development of which furnishes wide scope for a dramatic blending of pathos and comedy, with their attendant impetuous climaxes and vivid coloring. The husband enlists as a soldier, goes to the Philippines and returns sick unto death. Meanwhile the wife and her two children the two little waifs have a miserable existence in a garret. Despite the addresses of the villain, who was concerned in her misfortune, though unknown to her, the wife remains true to her absent husband. With her children she wanders through the streets, seeking charity and an escape from the proffered love of the man whom she has learned to hate. At last husband and wife discover each other, and the misunderstandings which kept them apart are explained in the happy reunion of loving hearts. Miss Helen Carroll plays the difficult role of the twin sisters, which requires lightning changes in costumes and facial expressions. The two children, Stanley and Lolita Lamb, are said to be clever and pathetic in their rendition of the waifs. A strong and capable supporting company is promised. ft ft Following The Two Waifs, Manager Hammer announces Ostler Joe, which will round out the week at the Ostler Joe is said to be inGrand. terpreted by a capable company and the piece is further strengthened by special scenery and costumes. ft ft For tomorrow evening Mr. Held an nounces a program of special merit, arranged with special reference to the varied tastes of his audience.
