There seems to be a disposition not to make this investigation thorough, presumably because it would implicate Remany men of high standing in the Senpublican party, including the late ator Hanna, Saint Louis Kerens, Perry Heath and our own Senator Kearns, and others who at various times sought earnestly for Mormon church influence. Senators Burrows, McComas, Hoar and Dubois of the investigation committee talk as if they meant to probe the business to its depth, hut they are not in as much of a hurry as they were a while ago, and doubts are expressed as to whether it can be completed during the present session of congress. The people of Utah who are most vitally interested demand and have a right so to do, that the investigation proceed with all the expedition possible and that it be thorough and complete in every respect. o t calling of those it represents Thn paper has absolutely no influence with the reputable portion of the comm nity. & Councilman A. J. Davis is nothing if not loyal to his friends. His devotion to the cause of Bruce Johnson the negro, is sublime. On the altar of friendship and the Red Onion saloon, Mr. Davis is willing to sacrifice a great deal, Chief of Police Lynch included. Davis is ready to vote for the removal of the chief and for the confirmation in the position of a Democrat,, all because the chief would not consent to recommend a renewal of a liquor license to the saloon with the outlandish appellation. It cant be done, however, for the democrats of the council would not consent to obtaining control of the police department at the expense of an efficient and a faithful officer and the continuance of a nuisance, like the Red Onion place. & MUNICIPAL AFFAIRS. The Kearns members of the city council are playing the fool sure enough. Truth will not descend to the level of the Tribune and engage in a mud slinging contest. They are flying directly in the face of the will of the people ''so emphatically prorecent at election. The nounced the was an unmisresult of the election takable protest against the methods of the Kearns machine, yet the so- called republican members are doing their utmost to perpetuate those methods. Theirs is a rule or ruin policy. They are stopping the wheels of progress, and working great injury to the city and the tax payers, acting well the part of enemies to the public weal. Retribution will follow as sure as fate. As things are now Bruce Johnson and his followers of the tenderloin district are ruling the city. It was the vote of the red light district that elected the three members of the council of the Fifth precinct, Neuhausen, Davis and Black. That is where they got their majority. In the respectable part of the precinct they ran behind, and they are now serving the element to which they owe their election. The opposition to the mayor is for spoils and those opposing him have placed themselves in the position of political free hooters. How does the decent element of the community like public affairs being dominated by the harlots, gamblers, sure thing men, and the dive keepers, white and black. The Tribune, the organ of that section of the republican party is making a fight for its constituents on lines in Keeping with the character and The trouble which the Kearns republicans of the council are making Is now in the acute stage. The re--, publican party generally realizes the dangerous game to the fortunes of the party In the coming election which is being played, but the Kearns cohorts seem determined to either rule or ruin. It is, however, generally believed by republicans that the removal of Senator Hanna as a probable presidential candidate and the almost certainty of the nomination of Roosevelt will strengthen the local republican party so that with Roosevelt at the head the local ticket will pull through no matter how bad conditions here may be. The democrats on the other hand claim that even if they cant carry their presidential electors the misdeeds of the republican representatives in city affairs will so disgust the decent element of that party that the democratic candidates for local offices will be elected.
