Show AMU8EMENT8. Salt Lake Theatre A Friend of the Family, matinee today, performance tonight. Coming Attractions. Salt Lake Theatre Ellerys Royal Italian Band, Sept 11th and 12th. Today formally marks the opening of the theatrical season in this city, with A Friend of the Family, which will be presented at the Salt Lake theatre this afternoon and evening. It is described as a roaring comedy full to overflowing with hysterical situations and the ever growing opportuni- ties of complications which grow from mistaken identity. The cast is said to be in the hands of capable comed- ians, the leading female role being sustained by Miss Alice Johnson,. an actress, it is said, who fully sustains a reputation for grace and beauty to which are united the fresh and breezy gayety of smart comedy a combination that accentuates every feminine personality. Following A Friend of the Family comes a flood of good things, with but little intermission. "The Burgomaster, which we saw before, will be with us again for three nights, beginning Sept 14th. Following The Bur, gomaster comes The Prince of fresh from the plaudits of New Yorkers, will round out a solid week of high class comic opera. Both Pil-sen- operas are under the personal management of Mr. Savage, which guarantees rich and dressy costumes, costly scenic.. effects, and, above all, a galaxy of shining chorus girls of pressive shape and faultless outline Besides The Burgomaster and "The Prince of Pilsen it is expected that another of Savages companies King Do Do will also shortly renew his acquaintance with Salt Lake theatre-goer- s. t4 j Every Salt Laker is justly elated over the instant success scored by always conscientious and acceptable. him for a second term as councilJudged by the laughter and applause, man of the bloody Fifth. Gambling teems to flourish unchecked. Minors can- obtain intoxicating drinks at almost every dive in the city. Little boys pass the officers smoking cigarettes on the streets unmolested, and many more infringements of law and inler are of daily occurrence. When m old criminal is brought before the bistlce, it does not matter if he is charged with fighting, disturbing the neace and resisting an officer, he is generally assessed a very light fine, rom $2.50 to $5. If it happens to be i stranger and perhaps his first a plain drunk, he is assessed rom $5 to $10. The above is not an die talc, but facts that can easily be iroven, it is known to all lovers of bw and good government. This kind of business ought to cease, and a demand should be made upon the city officials to strictly enforce thejcity ordinances. A week or more spent in Cache valley at its capital, Logan, assures, your correspondent that a more beautiful and productive valley does not exist anywhere in this intermountain region. There is an evident thrift, both in towns and country, that gives assurance that a wave of prosperity has fallen on that region that promises to grow and remain for some time to come. Nowhere in the state of Utah has nature been more bountiful or more conspicuously prodigal in her gifts than in this favored locality. Agricultural and horticultural developments are something remarkabte throughout the valley. From Paradise to Preston one cannot iail to see the results of careful husbandry and energetic toil that has made thousands of acres viejd a grateful abundance to the cheerful toiler. in Perhaps many preceding years there has net been so bountiful a harvest in all kinds of vegetation and cereals as that the present year will record, and aside from this there is a noticeable improvement going on in every town in the valley. In I ogan it was told me that anyone who could drive a nail or saw to a straight line could s get the wages of a carpenter and joiner, and I believe it. Work there languishes for want of help, and I heard not a few lamenting that laborers were not more plentiful. Returning toward Salt Lake City I stopped oft at Brigham City and what shall I say of it? The chief product raised there is fruit, and such fruit. Nowhere on Gods green earth could one duplicate it. And such an abundance of it. The two leading packing concerns of the town are Knudson Bros, and R. L. Fishburn & Sons. Both houses are strenuously working day and night to fill orders, and are then behind. To illustrate the volumne of the fruit business there, I will say that the train from the north was thirty min-.- , utes late. At Brigham City it was delayed in taking on fruit. At Willard, the next station south, another delay of twenty minutes in taking fruit, and then thirty minutes more at the Warm Springs, the last station before coming into Ogden, was taken up for the reception of fruit from North Ogden. It is a great nuisance to travel unless people have time and patience to spare, and I really think that the Oregon Short Line should, during the rush season of fruit, put on a special fruit train. It certainly would be an accommodation to fruit dealers and a wonderful comfort to the traveling community. 0 FVNNY FARCE - ALICE JOHNSON SWpjLBBE.. - 50c md 25c. Children. 25c.
