P. Armstrong, in the Central Block, The theft was proved beyond doubt, and the penalty for petit larceny made light, because Bynon had been on a drunk for three months jind was so under the influence of liquob that he stole to get money for more whiskey, for he sold the coat and bought booze with the proceeds. Now anyone who known Harry Bynon, knows he is not naturally a thief. But redeye has got the best of him and the man needs help. What a pity to put him in- jail. The law should have been so made that he could have been sent to an institute for the cure of drunkenness, instead of being, thrown in the bastile for five dajs. What goodwill that do him? When he gets out every nerve in his body will be screeching for liquor. He will have to have it and he - will have it. If the statutes permitted the action mentioned he would from the place a good, sober emerge citizen. What a farce we are running to be sure. Imprisonment for a disease. Make a criminal of a man who is as ill as the typhoid fever patient. How long will we animals continue this sort of conduct toward our fellow beings? |
