It has been proposed to make the connections with the sewer from the county Infirmary, but that pipe is too small, and the only way would be to connect with the main gravity sewer, which would necessitate the building of a sewer for a distance of a Jims. Thev LOS . LUKES COLLECTION AGENCY. The Merchants Protective association, better known as Lukes collection agency, is an institution which for years has been a disgrace to the city. It should he suppressed, or at least compelled to confine its efforts in making collections to lawful methods. At intervals spasmodic attacks have been made on the Lukes, but the only ones which were at all successful were those of irate citizens who administered personal castigation on those who conducted the agency. Such methods, however much they may relieve the feelings of agrieved parties, are not as a rule productive of permanent good. A better method is by due process of law. The County Attorney has recently had about ten complaints against -the Lukes lodged in his office and is engaged in the investigation of their merits. These complaints make charges of forgery, duress, obtaining money by false pretenses, extortion, abuse of legal process and the like. County Attorney Christensen is disposed to prosecute the agency on any charge which seems well founded with a reasonable prospect of conviction, and the prospects are for the next few months the Lukes will be kept so busy defending themselves that they will not have so much time to attack other people. While merchants who extend credit must beyond any question keep a sharp lookout and use great diligence in making their collections, otherwise their losses would overcome their profits, yet their efforts to obtain what is due them should be directed in legal channels. There is a charge pending in Justice Lochries court at the present time against Francis G. Luke accusing Luke of forging the name of the Justice to a summons with the object of extorting money. John F. Boes went on a deer hunt- ing expedition in Tooele county on Monday and wounded a fine specimen of the tribe, which, however, got away and as night came on the hunter had to give up the chace for the day. He returned to Salt Lake, but set out again the next day and trailed down the wounded animal. .
