Not much actual work could be done this week, the time being largely taken up with enrollments and promotions and the many things incidental to beginning a new school year. The schools opened under favorable conditions and everything points to a year of usefulness and progress. . ft ft One thing the board of education should give immediate attention is the system of writing, which has been in force for a number of years. The vertical system was introduced all over the country at the instance of parties who had copy books to sell, and Salt Lake fell into the trap like most other places. The system is little short of an abomination. That kind of writing is clumsy, far from beautiful and makes rapid peamanship an impossibility. For business purposes it is a handicap and should be discarded at once. |
