Thats why I have started Truth. Truth is Independent in politics and everything else. JOHN W. HUGHES, Editor. i THE PRESIDENT is dead. The Nation is bowed down with sorrow and all the world mourns. The grief of 'the eighty millions of people in this Republic is deep and acute like unto the sorrow of men and women who have lost a relative or a dear personal friend, and with them the nations of the earth mingle their tears, standing with uncovered heads in the presence of weeping Columbia. To the bereaved wife and kindred the great heart of the Nation goes out and prayers of millions ascend on their behalf to the great Father to whose bosom their loved one passed with the words, Nearer, My God, to Thee, lips. on his SENATOR WELLINGTON of Maryland is credited with saying in an interview concerning the 'shooting of the President: McKinley and I are enemies. I have nothing good to say about him, and under the circumstances do not care to say anything bad. I am indifferent to the whole matter. Senator Wellington refuses to affirm or deny the correctness of the interview. That a statement of this kind should be made is not so strange, for there are scrubs in all countries. The marvel of it is that a man with such instincts should be chosen to fill the high position of United States Senator. His at- titude certainly does not furnish an example for the youth of the country to look up to and breaks of this kind tend to belittle the office Senator Wellington holds, for it proves that a man of less than average principle may be come Senator. 1 1 THE CITY COUNCIL should grant a franchise to the Merchants Light com- - pany, the application for which is now The applicants, under consideration. however, should see Dooly about it, that is, if they are not too late. The Bell Telephone company secured the services of Dooly to kill all applications for franchises for competing telephone companies, and he did the business with neatness and dispatch. The Utah Light and Power company may have enlisted his sympathies" on their behalf. If it is so the City Council will grant no franchise though the merchants and other users of light and power scream for it until they are hoarse.
