Show PEET'S OPINION OF OWEN THE "SPOTTER." Editor Truth: "There's hope e'en on the death-bed for a square, straightforward thief, But Judases havo always come to most peculiar grief, Tho Lord has pity, I suppose, on errln' men an weak, But no good satisfactory place in which to put a sneak." A sneak is no worso than the people peo-ple who hire him to do their dirty work. A sneak is like a skunk, he will go Into tho cleanest place ho can find so that tho stench ho leaves will be more perceptible. Utah, although it is tho youngest stato, stands at tho head of all others In morality, education, school attendance, school buildings, temperance, homes, cll-mato cll-mato and all other natural advantages. Yet it is tho most menaced state In tho union. It has within its borders a veritable Molly McGulre-Kearns society; a Frank Canonized Mafia known as tho Utah Gentile Information Bureau, tho most active department of tho Salt Lake Ministerial Association. Tho preachers, preach-ers, to more thoroughly knock Utah and harass and systematically injure every business man, and to keep out Immigration, and to pull every string of their defamatory nature, to cast reproach re-proach on our schools and tho young men and women of this state, organized organ-ized this Gentile Bureau of Information, Informa-tion, the notorious devil fish society of tho reverend knockers. When they first organized this society they elected elect-ed poor old Richard Wake to distribute dis-tribute their diabolical llteraturo, and although the Rev. Wake was quite a trouble breeder he was too slow; ho would not do tho contemptible things they wanted done. I have before me a copy of a letter of this society published pub-lished In a cheap monthly paper. This letter is headed as follows: "Utah Gentile Information Bureau, Room 18, Mercantile Block, Salt Lako City, Nov. 10, 1905." This letter is a series of falsehoods from first to last and was intended to add fuel to the fires of hatred that Marion Bonsell has been stirring up against Utah. Tho letter Is signed not by the Rev. Richard Wake, but by C. M. Owen, Dr. Paden's hired spotter. The following will show what this man Owen is doing do-ing and has done for Utah. Mr. David Eccles Is probably the wealthiest man In Utah and distributes more money In wages each month than any other man In the state. The Amalgamated Sugar companies, The Utah Construction Construc-tion company (tho largest railroad construction company In America), the Eccles lumber companies, the new smelter to bo built in Ogden, the steam and street railroads, etc., etc., are all monuments to Mr. David Eccles and his partners. With all this business Mr. Eccles had to leave It and go to Washington, D. C, to refute the gross falsehoods of C. M. Owen and not only that Owen dragged Mrs. Margaret Geddes to Washington, D. C, nnd compelled her to acknowledge her shame (with which Mr. Eccles had no connection whatever), before the world and all, to no purpose but to Injure Utah. C. M. Owen cast reflections reflec-tions upon many good men, whom he said had taken plural wives since the manifesto and his statements were all falsehoods, not facts. Hero is what Mr. James H. Brady, Republican chairman of Idaho and one of tho brightest witnesses at tho Smoot investigation, in-vestigation, said of C. M. Owen: "Wo know that there aro polygamlst families fami-lies in Idaho a small number of them. Aside from the question of their polygamous relations, nobody questions their honesty or integrity. These old men havo their families living liv-ing around them, and they go over and see their children. They may stay until un-til night. They may put their children to bed; and the old people may sit thero before the fireplace and talk. Charles Mostyn Owen may sneak up to the house and peep in tho window to see what these old people are doing. do-ing. I will not do it. Senator Dubois will not do it, I say, and I do not know of any good business man in Idaho who will do it." Nearly all religious denominations havo some outward or secret signs of their society. The Quakers, Ornish, Mennonltes, Moravians, Dunkards, River Brethren, Sisters of Charity and tho Shakers all show their religion In their dress and as long as their garb is not offensive to other people they havo a perfect right to wear it. Many of tho other denominations have some part of their garments or some token on their persons that they do not exhibit ex-hibit which they consider private and sacred. The Catholics, tho High Epls-copals, Epls-copals, tho Lutherans, the Presbyterians Presbyter-ians and tho Mormons all belong to this class. These emblems may seem ridiculous in the eyes of all who do not understand them. Thero are many things that all people do that are secret se-cret and perfectly moral, legitimate and right, but in these moments of secrecy se-crecy suppose that some "Peeping ' Charley" should snealc up to their window and then go out upon tho highway high-way and proclaim to tho world what ho saw, decent people would be tempted tempt-ed to lynch him. In a community whero "Peeping Charlies" are employed em-ployed no person Is safe from ridicule. It is quite well known that many good Mormons wear an undergarment known as an endowment robe. This sft endowment garment is perfectly legitimate le-gitimate and right and is as sacred to the Mormon as a scapula is to a Cath-Illc Cath-Illc and no ono has any more right to ridicule a Mormon for wearing this garment than ho has a Sister of Charity Char-ity because she has her head shaved or her hair clipped. In Washington, D. C, in December, 1904, Mr. C. M. Owen procured a Mormon endowment garment and went before a photographer photog-rapher and had his photograph 'taken with this garment on nnd then had it 'r pictured In ridicule In a Washington, , D. C, paper. Mr. Tayler, the antl-Smoot antl-Smoot lawyer, did not advlso it and , was much chagrined when ho saw it in the paper. Mr. C. M. Owen testified he was hired and paid by Rev. Dr. Paden, of Salt Lake, and that he made all his reports to him. Mr. Owen also swore that he was counseled from Salt Lake about exhibiting the endowment garment, which shows that Dr. Paden and his counsel in Salt Lako were so contemptible that their own attorney would not stand for their methods. Suppose it had been ex-Senator Kearns on trial instead of Senator Smoot would Charley Owen have taken ta-ken a female relative of his to a barber bar-ber shop and had her head shaved and put a Sister of Charity's dress on her nnd gone before a photographer and had her photograph taken exhibiting her shaved head and pictured it In tho paper as a specimen of one of the teachers of tho Kearns St. Ann's Orphanage? Or-phanage? I would not think of writing writ-ing on such a disagreeable subject if recent developments did not show that C. W. Owen was still In tho employ of Dr. Paden or tho Ministerial association, asso-ciation, and Is now In Washington pursuing his despicable methods. The scurrilous anti-Utah unsigned articles in the Assembly Herald all point to the Gentile Bureau of information. in-formation. Here is one statement, "There is probably not a Gentile in Utah but what wishes Utah would bo reduced to a territory." Here is another: an-other: "Polygamy Is probably moro generally practiced in Salt Lako today to-day than ever before." When tho Now York (Yellow) Journal got through with Mr. Owen they fired him. And if there had been common decency de-cency In the people who hired C. M. Owen to help unseat Senator Smoot they would also havo given him his walking papers after the despicable acts of which ho has been guilty. Utah , Is the fairest flower In the bouquet of states. But tho Ministerial association and tho Tribune and their hirelings would hurl tho . mud of sectarian hatred and personal per-sonal revenge at Its magnificent grandeur and beauty, and make It look small, mean and dirty by the side of the other states of this great nation. na-tion. They are the deadly black damp and aro trying to smother all tho business busi-ness enterprises, schools, institutions and all Immigration schemes in this state. They are spies on every street corner and public place who hold aloft the dagger and the skull and cross bones, frightening settlers and capitalists away. The sermons that were preached by tho members of tho Ministerial Association three weeks ago, tho dally grind of tho Salt Lako Tribune, tho devil fish llteraturo and tho secret and personal letters of the Gentile bureau of information, tho speeches that are being mndo by tho Jv Revs. Wesley Hill, T. C. Ill ft, Duncan -J. McMillan and others, In the eastern states, nnd tho false and defamatory articles In tho Christian papers by tho Rev. S. E.
