Show REASONS WHY COLORED PEOPLE SHOULD NOT VOTE THE AMERICAN TICKET. To tho Editor of Truth: If you can spare space In your col- umns I would like to tell, among other things, why the colored people should not vote tho "American" ticket. First, I would like to call tho attention atten-tion of those intending to vote the Kearns ticket to the fact that they are merely making tools of themselves for tho heneflt of a faction of disgruntled dis-gruntled ofllce-seekers who have been defeated through their own selfish actions, ac-tions, and this applies to every one, from Kearns down to dog-catcher. 1 want to ask tho same ones, referring of course to those of my own race, who will have to suffer when the Kearns throne tumbles and falls, for fall It must, for no such movement can bo successfully consummated by Kearns and his faction. Then, what can the colored man accomplish when these greedy politicians, like Kedrns, soe that they cannot accomplish their selfish undertaking? Thoy (Kearns and his followers) of course will swing back into line without even losing place or position at tho Republican pie-counter, leaving his colored tools out in tho rain to suffer for his conduct. con-duct. For tho colored man will bo counted as having disoboyed tho will of tho party which freed him, tho party which has advanced his Interests alone . with other Interests of tho country. Wo have only to look around and see - colored men filling positions of trust, with credit both to his race and coun-- try, placod thero by tho Republican Cfc party, and, colored men of Salt Lake City, I am in duty bound, as ono of these, to offer these reasons along with others, that you have already seen as intelligent reasons why you should not give away your elective franchise to Thomas Kearns and his dissatisfied followers, for thoy only .seek to benefit themselves and not you. In answer to an artlclo that appeared ap-peared In tho Salt Lako Tribune, male Ing political capital through tho colored col-ored writer for tho Tribune, who be-camo be-camo dissatisfied merely because he did not got a job at tho hands of the Republican county administration, 1 will say that tho argument that tne rjm - - colored man has no representation " compared with his voting power and taxable property owned by him is ver weak. If you will pardon mo for making mak-ing this argument so lengthy, I will proceed to show just how much ,fc - strongth tho colored population has from both sources mentioned. He polls less than 300 votes, pays taxes on less than $50,000 worth of property, personal and real, though thero is ono fact that wo must admit, and to our credit, that he is on the rapid Increase in both population and in wealth, and In a few more years, If tho colored man of progress and of thought in this city will bo mindful of what he does and how ho docs it, casts his ballot for tho men with good, sound business judgment, who have stood up for Salt Lake and Its future, and who will put forth every effort to defeat tho aims of Tom yearns and his ofllce-seekers, then, men of color, your interests along with others of tho city will bo advanced. ad-vanced. In conclusion let mo beg of you to rally to tho support of that patriotic citizen whom wo have found to be n Republican in time of defeat as well as of victory, whom you all know, William J. Lynch. COLORED VOTER. |
