Show The Election and the Future The "American" party swept tho decks. They have gained all tho clij offices and most of the council. Mayor , Thompson for tho third time Is at tho head of tho city government. He is an honest man and wo believe will do his utmost to fulfil the ante-olec-tlon promises made by his party that they would bring peace and great prosperity to tho city. Truth hopes they will have control of tho city I council so that tho mayor will not be I" handicapped in his administration. We hope tho new ofllcial3 will have a free hand and that they will give thi city an honest, progressive and vig-' oroiiB administration. Men of all parties par-ties should unlto In supporting thrm if they show a sincere desire to do well. No obstacles should bo put in tho way. Let them go aheaa unhandi--caped and aid them in all possible ways In their efforts to build up the city. Tho list of winning -officers who will 'take tho reins of government on January 1 next, Is as follows: Mayor Ezra Thompson. Recorder John B. Moreton. Attorney Ogdon Hlles. ' Treasurer Frank A. Swenson.. Auditor Rudolph Alff. COUNCIL. First Ward-Long Ward-Long Term L. D. Martin. Short Term C. J. Crabt'reo, Second Ward Long Term E. G. O'Donnoll. Short Term A. R. Carter. Third Ward-Long Ward-Long Term John Holloy. ' Short Torm F. S. Fernstrom. Fourth Ward-Long Ward-Long Term E. A. Hartensteln. Short Torm W. J. Tuddenham. Fifth Ward I Long Term T. R. Black. Short Torm M. E. Mulvoy. Tho five general officers at the head of tho ticket aro "Americans." Six of tho ton councllmon elected aro .Americans' and four aro Democrats: Holley, Fernstrom, Hartensteln and Tuddonliam. Since the t Mon everybody has been tolling how It happened, how it was done. Tho Republicans were stunned at tho first by their defeat, but they soon regained their courage and aro taking It philosophically. There is no doubt that on Saturday and up to Monday afternoon the Republicans Re-publicans had tho lead, but a wholesale whole-sale chango took place. Tho opposition opposi-tion to tho "American" party very well knew that In order to defeat tho "Americans" "Am-ericans" it was absolutely necessary that they concentrate on one- or tho other of the two opposing tickets. Tho Democrats would not yield tb tho Republicans Re-publicans and the Republicans would not yield to tho Democrats. All el!orts at fusion of any kind proved abortive and tho third party slipped in between them. On Saturday it was settled on what appeared to be a solid basis that Lynch was the man with whom to dr feat tho "Americans." On Monday the Deseret News gavo tho Republicans a hard roast, denounced them for trying to obtain church influence and leading tho Mormons to believe that President Smith wanted the Republican ticket elected. Tho News' statement was emphatic that President Smith was taking no hand in politics and that so far as he was concerned tho people peo-ple should vote as they pleased. This articlo had tho effect of weakening the Lynch sentiment. The impression, as was Intended by tho News editors, got abroad that tho weaker Mormons would take It as an intimation that tho church expected them to voto the Democratic ticket. The Gentiles who hitherto had stood firmly by tho Republican Re-publican ticket became alarmed feai Ing that they would bo sold out, and stampeded to tho "American" ticket. Tho Mormon Republicans when It became be-came evident ,about noon, tho way things wore going and that tho Re? publican ticket could not bo electea, went over in blocks to the Morris ticket to defoat tho "Americans," but It was too late. If the stampedo had begun a couple, of hours earlier tho Democratic ticket would have been elected. It was tho good luck of tho "Americans" that beat both Democrats and Republicans and saved them tho day. There aro several things to bo very seriously considered by tho Republicans Republi-cans who from being, ono year ago, almost as strong as tho Democrats and "Americans" combined have fallen fal-len to a bad third. With their strength they ought to have easily won in spito of anything tho opposition could havo done. It is, howovcr, a fact that almost on tho day tho permlclous Kearns machino was smashed, disscnlions In tho ranks of the successful wing of tho party that broke tho Kearns machine, began to arise. Mutterings of discontent discon-tent were heard among thoso who expected rewards and didn't got them. Tho talk began that another machino was being built up Hko the old Kearns one had been. This spirit grew, but was not considered consid-ered formidable, until after election when It became very apparent that a great many even of tho Mormon Republicans Re-publicans voted the American ticket in order to administer a rebuko to what they called the Smoot machine. More than ono prominent Mormon Republican Re-publican with a following was heard to say that worso things could happen hap-pen than tho election of tho "American" "Amer-ican" ticket. Since the election more of such people havo said that they voted for tho "Americans," and others who stood by their party to tho extent of voting tho Republican ticket say they aro glad that tho "Americans" won. In ono of tho voting districts of tho First ward there are only 50 Gentiles, but that district gavo 1G0 straight votes for tho "Americans," showing conclusively that at least ono hundred Mormons in that little dls-j trict had voted tho "American" ticket. This and other things show that tho discontent in tho Republican ranks was greater than was supposed. No party, no onterprlso of any kind can accomplish anything without leaders. lead-ers. In politics It is difficult to draw the lino whoro legitimate leadership ends and bossism begins. Tho pres ent leaders may or may not have overstepped that line. It Is equally true that tho malcontents have done very, very, little for tho party except hold office or try to hold office. They havo neither given tlmo or monoy to build it up while thoso thoy crltizlso havo given both. Thero Is ono thing, however, absolutely certain that something some-thing will havo to bo done to harmonize harmon-ize tho different factions of tho party. Now looking to tho future. Next year there will bo a state election. Member of congress, members of tho If legislature and county officers aro to ! bo elected. Tho "American" party flushed with victory In Salt Lake will spread over tho state. Next year thoy might elect tho county tickots in Salt Lake county and several other oth-er counties, they might elect the on- j tiro members of tho legislature in this i and other counties. What Is tho op- i position, tho Republicans and Demo- I crats going to do to stop them? With two tickets In tho field against thorn thoy carried tho city a few days ago. Next year thoy will havo tho ontlro 1 f city under their control which means j a great deal. Aro wo going back to ( tho condition of Liberals and Peoplo's j pnrty which wo thought wo had loft , behind a dozen years ago? Aro wo ; going back to it now at a timo when It is less needed than at any other ; timo In tho history of tho state? These aro most Important matters to j bo considered in tho not Yery distant futuro. jj |
