Show J ' KEARNS' "AMERICANS" KNOCKING UTAH ABROAD. Chicago, 111., Oct. 31, 1905. Editor Truth "Tho windy city of tho west" Is rainy and sloppy this week, but withal it has been very pleasant. Ono of the first persons I met here was the only John P. Meakin. Mr. Meakin lectures or talks overy night on Utah. Monday night at a parlor reception, Tuesday night at a club meeting, Wednesday night at Evnnston, 111., etc. Everywhere ho is boosting Utah in his pleasing and dramatic way. His Interviews in the New York Journal and in tho Clove-land Clove-land Plain Dealer and his book, "Mormon "Mor-mon Romnnce," which will soon be widely circulated, aro already working work-ing wonders for Utah. I also met Miss Lura Vino Smith, a prominent newspaper news-paper writer of this city, who visited friends in Salt Lake City last summer Sho Is so incensed at Marlon Bonsell's blood and thunder falsehoods about Utah In a cheap Minneapolis paper that sho Is answering them In the Minneapolis Progress. Sho Is certainly certain-ly handling Marion Bonsell without gloves in a masterly way. I also met Mr. John Y. Smith, who had just returned re-turned from tho Bankers' convention nt Washington, D. C. Mr. Smith nddressed a largo gathering of bankers bank-ers on utnh, its peoplo and its advantages advan-tages and his interviow in tho Wash-'"gt," Wash-'"gt," D- c-) Times has certainly put Utah in a proper light before the monoyed men of this nation. It is cor-tainly cor-tainly refreshing to know that Utah has r - oer of loyal friends who are prouu agister in eastern states that they are from Salt Lako City, Utah. They are not like Mr. Weir, who is ashamed of Salt Lako City and prefers pre-fers to register from "Ingratitude" or "Traitor City," or somo other city that suits his nature better. Tho Salt Lake Tribune is being circulated in many eastern railroad offices and by real estato agents who are selling lands in the southern states. The Tribune Is certainly a big hammer in the hands of a southern real estato agent to knock Utah. Anyone hero who reads tho Trlbuno and believes it could not be Induced to live in Utah if ho were given tho best farm in tho "Mormon state." Many peoplo in this section of the country who are looking towards Utah with a view of settling there are much Interested In the coming election. elec-tion. According to statements in the Trlbuno and those of the reverend and other knockers, if Ezra Thompson Thomp-son Is elected, Salt Lako City will be tho only redeemed city or place in Utah. To elect Ezra Thompson for mayor of Salt Lake City would bo to acknowledge the statements in the Tribune that polygamy is increasing in Utah. That no one can commence business in Utah without first getting the consent of tho Mormon hierarchy; that Gentiles aro starved out and driven from tho stato; that the majority major-ity of Mormon homes In Utah are harems; that young Mormon men and women are immoral and disloyal; that no one can get a job in any public capacity ca-pacity without giving 10 per cent or his wages to the Mormon church; that our public schools aro Mormon church schools, etc. To elect Ezra Thompson for mayor would bo to acknowledge ac-knowledge to the whole world that Thomas Kearns is the political leader, dictator and tho great sliver king of Utah and tho little tin god of tho "American" party of knockers. Are the peoplo of Salt Lake City going to acknowledge before the whole world Ezra Thompson, who was mayor of Salt Lake City for four years, who spent hundreds of thousands of public pub-lic money without giving ono public Improvement in return, who has maintained main-tained and derived revenue from sa- i loons and dives In one-story tumble- . V. downs on Second South street ns mon- unments to his progressive spirit? Are tho people of Salt Lako City going to reward this Brutus as her mayor while tho wounds of the dagger thrusts of his previous administration are still fresh In mind? Thomas Kearns is tho father of tho "American" party of knockers, and Ezra Thompson is his personal candidate for mayor. Thorn-is Thorn-is Kearns Is a very wealthy man, but to Injuro Salt Lako City ho has maintained main-tained and derived great revenue from the old wooden shacks on Main street that ho owns. Aro tho peoplo of Salt Lake City going to reward re-ward Thomas Kearns and his puppet Ezra for maintaining their shanty blots in tho heart of tho city? I think not. Tho voters of Salt Lake City ire just ns loyal today as our grandfathers grand-fathers were In colonial days, when they forever banished tho traitors Benedict Ben-edict Arnold and Aaron Burr. There aro many California peoplo hero, who aro boosting their state. They arc exhibiting tho products of tho Golden state and aro telling of its wonderful climate, scenery and good people. Thoy do not tell that San Francisco has more Catholics than any other denomination and that thoy are a great factor In politics; thoy do not tell that Los Angeles Is filled with Christian Scientists and that Benja-mln Benja-mln Frey Mills is swnylng that city toward tho new thought idea; thoy do not tell that Amity, California, is owned own-ed and controlled by a noisy religious sect known ns tho Salvation Army, who beat big bass drums and pass tho hat many times at their hilarious meetings; they do not try to injure tho Baptists and California by rehearsing, re-hearsing, tho Durrant murders; they do not tell that thoy were all Baptists In high church positions connected with those horrible murders and that Durrant was a Baptist, Danlte, etc., etc. They only speak of the good things of California for they know that good people seek a good state to live In and when I compare the California Cali-fornia literature to the Tribune and the Devil Fish literature of the reverend rever-end knockers that is being distributed here, the thought Is appalling. The dirty cartoons the filthy editorials, the licentious reading matter in tho Tribune Trib-une and tho hideous Devil Fish literature litera-ture of tho reverend knockers only appeals ap-peals to the lowest, tho basest and most Immoral element of society and drives away good people, good thoughts and kind words from Utah. Will the people peo-ple of Salt Lake City endorse Thomas Kearns, Ezra Thompson, Furious J. Cannon and Judge Hlles, who are tho leaders of this compaign of injury to Utah? Yours truly, V. S. PERT. |
