Show GIVE VOTERS THE FACTS Analysis of Vote In the City In 1903, When Morris Was Elected, Shows i the Republican Candidate to Be the Stronger One Now. i : 4 Two years ago In 1903 when the Republicans of this city saw that their convention had boon over-. over-. sla'ughod by Kearns' political de bauchery, they felt that they really had no Republican general city ticket In the field, and elected Mayor Morris; this, too, at a time when the Democrats Demo-crats had no hopo of winning, and would not have carried a single municipal muni-cipal ward In tho city If It had not been for tho uprising In tho Republican Republi-can ranks. It Is contended by some that the figures of that election show Mr. Morris to bo tho stronger candl- 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th Tot in Ward Ward Ward Ward Ward City. Walker and other prominent promi-nent Republican Gentiles in the City, vigorously engaged In trying try-ing to defeat the Republican nominee for Mayor. Tho figures cannot be These figures, produced under such circumstances, show conclusively that Salt Lake City Is not Democratic, politically. po-litically. Indeed, if, with tho Republican Republi-can support of tholr candidate forj Mayor In 1903 not because of any popularity ho might claim for himself, but because of tho disaffection among tho Republicans If the Democrats In such a caso could roll up only 574 majority ma-jority in two municipal wards for their Councllmanic ticket, while a majority of 1457 for tho Republican Councilman was piled up in tho other three municipal muni-cipal wards, then tho Democratic claim to being tho stronger party now " Is grotesque in its absurdity. Truth gives the foregoing tables that tho voters may havo all tho facts boforo them, and not bo misled by a juggling of figures on tho head of the ticket two years ago, which are no more a basis for accurato judgment on tho result now than would bo the voto on tho head of tho ticket one year ago, when President Roosevelt beat Mr. Parker, tho Democratic can- date now. Truth had analyzed those figures carefully before its utterance last week, and found that they prove beyond tho shadow of doubt that, with a real Republican ticket in the field, as now, such ticket is by long odds tho strongest beforo tho people, and is the ticket with which to beat tho Kearns aggregation at this time. Hero are two tables that, show tho facts, tho first being the voto for Morris Mor-ris and Knox, and the second, which is necessary to a completo understanding under-standing of tho situation in 1903, being tho result on the Council ticket: produced again, since nearly all the producers thereof aro now working shoulder to shoulder for tho Republican Republi-can ticket. But even with tho disaffection disaf-fection over tho Mayor In the Councllmanic fight tho Republicans carried tho city by 883 votes over the Democrats. Truth believes that tho most desirable de-sirable end to bo attained In this election is to defeat Tom Kearns tools, who comprise tho so-called "American" ticket, and by doing so to save tho city from debauchery and financial disaster. Wo aro with the people In any sensibly policy to achieve that result, and know that tho straight tip on that policy Is to vote tho Republican city ticket. Truth repeats what it said last week, that any sane person can readily see that J the contest for Mayor is between Lynch and Thompson, with the 'chances In favor of Lynch. Those favorable fa-vorable chances for Lynch have in-'creased in-'creased greatly tho past few days; 'and reputablo citizens, Irrespective of 'creed or party, aro awakening to the patent fact that tho best and only way to perform their whole duty In this election Is to beat Thompson with Lynch. Truth has always glvon tho people straight, honest facts, irrespective of the men or tho party It might hit, and j it does so now. |
