H M Coming Attractions. M Salt Lake theatre "Tho Lion and fl tho iMouko," November 10-21. M In tho game of "Checkers," now M playing at the Salt Lako theatre, M thero's a move every minute, and, In fl tho end, all tho players get into tho 8 king row. liut tills- a different kind of "Check-fl "Check-fl era." Instead of little squares on u M rod bacKground there Is a red fore-M fore-M ground with little circles' In tho back-M back-M ground, instead of moving at right M angles, the players In this footllght M "Checkers" rovolvo in an orbit. Some M of them revolve at a pretty fast pace M "Checkers," alter whom tho pby is M named, and Kendall, his companion, M have been Hying down the track wiili M their Wings wide open to the w.niU o. M lortuuo. Thoy have made merry M "Checkui'" an 1 Kendall and have M touched tho lilgh places along life's M midulatlug p.uhw.iy. They have gath- ered the lair Ilowers which bloom on-M on-M iy to deceive, oo, wiien nieir lorcancs M are depleted, "Checkers" and Kcndill M remove themselves from further temp-H temp-H tatlou by going to a village. Hero tlio H playwrlter has written In tho heart lnterebt of the drama tho love thi'jrul M out of which Is' woven the warp anil H woof of tho old, old story. Much of tho play rovovlcH around tho mutual Ml love ci "Cneukers and Kendall" tor HI tho samo girl. Tho girl, however, fas' fa-s' vors "Checkers" and she as becomes H a capricious female gives him a gold H slug lor a keepsake. Of course tho H betting fever at once breaks out in H . "Checkers" and lio liles away to tho H1 race-track. He makes a hundred to H one shot and wins a fortune. Willi the H money thus won ho returns to tho vll-H vll-H lage, saves his girl's father from 11-H 11-H nauclal ruin and gains the old man's H approval lor his daughter's han.l. H Much of tlio play is conventional. The H plot evolves nothing now, and, every H now nnd then, there arc seen the lurid H Hashes of melodrama. Tho positive H merit of tho play, however, lies In tho H clover treatment of tho story. Tho H lights and bliadcs are applied with tho Hi brush of an artist. That elusive, yet Hi always essential, thing called "atmos-H "atmos-H phcro" so skillfully wraps tho old, fa-H fa-H miliar situations that they aro seen H in a now perspectivo wearing tho H ciiarm of freshness and surprising H features. Added to this there aro tho Hi springs and motives which actuate H tno doings the comings and goings H of real men and women. Blood is M rod all through tho play. There is H not one character witli sawdust in his H veins. Written in tho story, and H througli it, so that ono may read H everywhere, are tlio largo letters that Ik spell human interest. Hf Tho play lends Itself to touches of Hi realism to wliich tlio bcenlc artist lias ' applied the limit of his art. Tho bot-H bot-H ting rlns in tho third act is realism with a big "It." Tho cast which in-H in-H terprots tlio play Is uniformly good H In places It Is excellent. Mr. Itobert I as "Checkers," Is splendid. Ho could H easily make tho role as absurd as tho H hero of a. melodrama. But, being an I actor, Mr, Robert makes "Checkers" H a thing of llesh a'lid blood... Mr. "Bra- ham's, interpretation of "Push" "Seller ; is. also a study In real '"art. "Cynthia," Hi as jexplolted by Miss Parker, is rather pliotograplilc of Rose Melville's. "Sis H Hopkins" although tho Interpretation I is by no means initiative. There aro I others in tho cast who capably fill their rolos. To enumerato tliem, however, how-ever, would merely add more leaves to tho laurels I have so freely woven. Go and see "Checkers" Is an admonition admoni-tion Salt Lakers do not need they aro Hocking to tho play already. The old guard is still enthusiastic with its applause at the Orphdum, this week, but, In truth there is little to crack nuts over. There i& ono number on tho program, pro-gram, however, which, In Itself is ample value for tho prlco of admission. Tho Four Bards, billed as America's greatest gymnasts, come pretty near to the extravagant claim on tho pro gram. For ways that aro strong and tricks that aro startling, tho Bards are really surprising. They are certainly cer-tainly high priests of muscularity and their arms aro drawing big dividends from tho Steel Trust. Wllllo Eckstein tho boy pianist, does some clever work pounding tho ivory keys, first with velvety fingers and then turning his chubby hands into iron hammers. Black faco comedians often ring laughter laugh-ter from an audlenco through sheer physical forco Castlo and Collins bo-lpng bo-lpng to this strenuous class. The Avon Comedy Four aro merrymakers and w'orth while. Bellman and Mooro give a number of character interpretations interpre-tations that please a portion of tho audience. As usual Prof. Weiho's orchestra or-chestra finds appreciation with tho Orpheum patrons. Tho klnodromo gives a series of Irish Incidents in "Kathleen Mavourneen." J & Tho Lyric Stock company made a decided hit with "A Son's Devotion," during tho. week. There were severnl nights-when tho Lyric boxofllco was' kept busy throwing out tickets. A. I theatre which can count on a regular patronage must havo merit as a basis for its success and tho Lyric Stock company Is winning success becauso it deserves the dramatic confidence of Salt Lakers. Mr. Frederick Moore, tho popular leading man of tho Lyric Stock company, com-pany, will soon succeed Mr. Petrich ns the manager of tho Main street house. Mr. Petrich will be transferred transfer-red to another of the Cort theatres, and will, no doubt, build up the same theatrical reputation ho has established estab-lished here. Under tho new management manage-ment of Mr. Moore, tho Lyric will continue con-tinue to give the same high standard of plays as In the past, and by a progressive pro-gressive policy continue to widen Its deserved popularity.
