An Editorial Opinion n. 3fc Bicentennial Plans Must Come ft Surface Soon To AMERICANS STAND only a few days away from what should mark the start of the biggest birthday party in fully 200 nation's bicentennial. Unforyears-o- ur tunately, many of us still seem to be in the planning stages and the birthday cake is still in the mixing bowl. The goal of the state bicentennial commission is to have the frame work celebration well for the year-lonby the first of the year. For instance, it should be possible by then to publish a listing of bicentennial events which will take place during the year which would allow citizens to fit as many as pssible into their schedules. Bicentennial projects which received money from the state were to have been completed and ready for use by January 1. Few are, it seems. g In Tremonton, a bicentennial commission appointed by the city council has not yet been asked to report back on its plans for the year. Nor has the city council shown much indication that they intend to take the bicentennial bull by the horns. On the local level there are any number of meaningful programs which could be carried on: o M Chamber of Commerce could develop a public awareness campaign, which might by utilized in the schools, to extoll the virtues of the free enterprise system. Wrong. It may be the end of a good marriage. Old It should serve not so much as a time to pat ourselves on the back for having survived as a democratic nation for so we are still relatively young long-f- or and still unproved. It should serve as a year in which we can make sure the train is back on the track and we can reassess the direction it is headed in. -- Every community in the county should, if it hasn't already been done, be compiling its own history. This can be done thru volunteer effort or by the use of tax money if the community desires. Copies of the histories should be made available for sale to members of the community. Many, commendably, such as the community of Howell are already in the process and others have histories finished at earlier times. off-dut- y You see, she picked out the we have Master Set The I go somewhere else. The festivals which could include ev- erything from rodeos to founder's day celebrations should have a common thread: a reactivation of the type of close-kncommunity life which characterized the early days of this area. -- It's fitting that a presidential election should take place during the bicentennial year. It provides an unlimited opportunity for Americans to focus in on the method by which we elect our leaders in a democracy. It would be a sad commentary if the election turnout in November 1976 proved to be anything less than a record. "I can stand The possibilities are limitless. And many ideas are being developed. The time has come, however, for those ideas to surface as concrete plans. The year 2076 is too long to wait for a second chance. CHRISTMAS The task of preventing crime and. building good, honest citizens is one that should begin at home-n- ot at the police station. By Ray Hall e Director This season of the year should hold special significance for those of us who are involved in teaching-whethe- r in the classroom or in the home. As we celebrate the birth of Him who is almost universally acknowledged as the Master Teacher we would do well to ponder His methods and His style. He cared deeply about those whom he taught. His great love for people, His understanding of their problems and weaknesses were obvious. Christ's greatest attribute as a teacher, however, was the fact he lived what he taught. He was a living example with no hypocrisy seeping through to contradict what He said. He was able to work with His pupils on their own level, choosing His examples from the daily activities and lives of His hearers. He was therefore able to reach beyond the intellectual level of learning souls. and move people by touching their inner-moHis teachings were relevant. Shoplifting is ajways a problem and has forced many stores to hire policemen to walk the aisles. But, the thefts are not only in the stores. Christmas lights seem to be a popular item for vandals. Dr. George Ficklin, for instance, recently placed outdoor Christmas lights around his home. Two days later 24 light bulbs turned up missing. Local police officers will get several other similar complaints during isn't Star-Gaz- aking to his wife until after the Christmas season, at least. it It is also unfortunate that many citizens view the bicentennial hullabaloo as a bunch of "bull," to use the country expression. It serves merely as an excuse to spend a lot of tax money in the eyes of some critics. Fortunately, the bicentennial can be much much more. Luckily it was dark when we made the buy and no one else was on the lot. I pulled up to the house with the lights turned off to attract less attention and hustled the "Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree." That's one of the joys of Christmas, right. -- The -- Various t ..People who go the extra mile seem few and far between these days.
