Edu Column Thanks Gducattn-What the legislature did last week when they passed the school finance bill was to give l.tah's edjeators a vote of con- fidence. During the hearings on the bill, members of the Joint Education Committee con- ferred with teacher representatives, school board representatives, and administrators. They did not grant everything the educators requested, but they did work with them to determine top priorities, and the bill that was passed reflects strongly the recommendations of those most directly involved with education. The appropriations were neither generous nor niggardly. They represented what seemed 7tfe ofl (nGndGiniCG G to be a reasonable and adequate amount to maintain present educational programs in the face of mounting inflation. The legislature said, then, We trust your to educators: If this is the least judgement. you can get by with to do a good job, here it is. . The lawmakers and taxpayers have now done, in large measure, what we asked them to do. Our job is to be worthy of their trust to provide the best possible educational programs with available resources. We cannot speak for every individual teacher, but as an association we can and do speak for the large majority of teach ers when increased dedication and greater effort not only to maintain but to improve the quality of instruction in every classroom. We encourage every one of our associates to examine and reexamine his own contribution and improve it where possible. We reaffirm our commitment to our Code of Ethics wherein it states: "The educator recognizes the magnitude of the responsibility he has accepted in choosing a career in education. . . The educator regards the employment agreement as we pledge a pledge to be executed both In spirit and in fact in a manner consistent with the highest ideals of professional service. faffS Don't Again WESTERN FAMILY 2nd WEEK OF CARLOAD SALE CREST FAMILY SIZE REG SI. 13 Toothpaste J believes that sound professional personnel relationships with governing boards are built upon personal integrity, dignity, He and mutual respect."
