The Thursday J evening Bible class is also held at the above address. This service begins at 7:30 p.m. Basic Bible doctrine continues to be the focus of this study. al All Must Now Be Reading Teachers Teachers unable to teach members that 25 district English teachers from the four secondary schools are now enrolled in a special course in the art of teaching reading. The course is taught each Tuesday evening from 7 to 10 p.m. at Box Elder High School with staff read- ing need not apply. That's essentially what the Box Elder Board of Education has told all area colleges and universities who send teachers armed with their degrees out looking for a job. Supt. Leonard Dalton recently revealed a letter sent to area universities which emphasizes the district's emphasis on basic reading and writing skills. The letter is a signal to all teachers that experience in reading is a "priority item for all teachers at all grade levels," Supt. Dalton said. The letter told college deans and placement officers that "it is. our desire to look for experience and-o- r training in the teaching of reading in the recommendations and resumes of all future teacher candidates for positions in Box Elder County, regardless of major or minor," Supt. Dalton noted. But the board is not merely content to look for reading training in future teachers. Morgan Hawkes, Administrator of Curriculum, told board In from Utah State University, Hawkes said. He said during discussions of reading problems at Box Elder High School, English teachers "admitted they don't know how to teach reading." Hawkes said the district insti-date- d a new English program a year ago, emphasizing the basics. The program requires students in the eighth, ninth and tenth grades to take reading courses if they are "below grade" in the subject. Although there are many approaches to reading, Hawkes said he believes "any program will work" with "good enough teach- ers." When secondary English teach- ers get through taking the reading instruction training course, Hawkes said the district believes they will "be a little more knowl Now Livestock Food edgeable in teaching reading." Supt. Dalton said the district's aim is to "charge the teacher with regardless assisting the child, of subject, with English." Hawkes noted that math teachers, for instance, probably don't have the time to work with individual students on reading. But training in reading will help them diagnose the poor reader and help them reinforce reading training given in reading courses. Since taking over as superintendent, Dalton said he has had "nothing but compliments" about graduates in "everything, but I have had some complaints in English." Dalton said the teaching market is a "buyers's market", noting that the district is in a position to pick and choose. "Those institutions should be turning out the kind of teachers we want," he emphasized. The actions apparently have the full support of board members. Said Burke Larsen, board president, "I'd like to see us have the best English course in th state." - - Program Is Available The Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) will administer a new emergency livestock feed program, according to Boyd K. Gardner, chairman of the Box Elder County ASC Committee. The 1977 farm bill, recently signed by the President, authorizes the program. "Eligible producers may be reimbursed for up to 50 percent of the cost of feed purchased for their livestock," Gardner said. The Box Elder County ASC committee will determine individual farmer eligibility basis. on a Prior emergency designation of the county from Washington is no longer necessary. Previously, ASCS administered a similar program but received mission assignments from the Federal Disaster Assistance Administration (FDAA). case-by-ca- se "The new program should result in better service to farmers since program decisions will be made at the county level rather than in Washington," Gardner said. Because the new program can go into effect on individual farms, it can provide assistance when only a few farms in a county have been affected by natural disaster, Gardner explained. Producers who have already received approval for emergency feed assistance are urged to contact the Box Elder county ASCS office to see if any adjustments may be required under the new law. Requests for assistance made earlier to FDAA and still pending will be automatically transferred to ASCS for action. Applicants for all ASCS programs will be given equal consideration without regard to race, color, sex, creed or national origin. School Districf job classification system will be designed by the Institute of Industrial Relations for the Box Elder County School District's classified employees. The Board recently entered into a $5,000 program with the University of Utah College of Business organization to design a job classification system to help clarify just which workers should be entitled to what level of pay. Dr. Arbon Clark said the institute will use master degree candidates to conduct a study in the district. Clark said the study will begin with an attempt to get job descriptions of each position in the classified employee ranks. The job descriptions will, originally, be written by the employees themselves, then discussed with supervisors and others to see if they are accurate. Once written they will be used to build a point system "based on factors needed in the job..." A Clark said the system have to be a "living system" updated regularly. Clark also emphasized would Serving The that the study will not recommend any salary figures, merely indicate the "relative value" of the various job positions. Supt. Leonard Dalton said the study has potential for "normalizing the situation between the district and classified personnel." Board Clerk, David Mor-rel- l, who handles many of the annual drawn out in part because of numerous questions over job classifications. The district will contract for the service at a cost of $5,000 which will be shared between it and the Classified Employees Association, both local and state. The superintendent noted that in order to resolve classified negotiations last September, he had to, in effect, promise such a study would be done. Clark noted that under the point system, only the institute will know how closely one particular job is to another job in a higher River Valley MAIN THEATRE bviana. unn rrk mv New WILDERNESS ADVENTURE ivy Raco Per TburLifo, Crown!
