Show Page . The Leader-Garlan- Times, April d 14. 19H Dewey Gardner Senators Wish Happy To Birthday A Deweyville man could hardly be blamed if he decides to crow a bit about his 79th birthday. After all, it's not often that two U. S. senators take notice of anyone's birthday, unless perhaps it's George Washington's and means the day off from work. Senators Jake Garn and Orrin Hatch took note of the 79th birthday of Dewey Gardner of Deweyville this past week. The two senators were actually a little late. His birthday was March 18. But letters from the two senators showed up at the Gardner home this past g resweek, congratulating the ident of the community. "May I take this opportunity to commend you for the service you have rendered the state and your community in your lifetime," Senator Garn life-lon- wrote. "If anybody had told me I wouldn't have believed him," Gardner shrugged, speaking about the two letters. He has no idea why he got the letters, unless some sharp-eye- d staffer happened to read in the "Deweyville" news about his birthday. It was Gardner's "grandpa" and his two polygamist wives who settled Deweyville before Tremonton and Garland were thought of. "I was born right here in that little old house over there by that trailer," Gardner said, pointing, "where the sun comes peeking in at morn," he added, apparently recalling a childhood verse. He married Nellie Irene Knowles in the thirties in the Logan Temple. The couple have been married for 47 years. "I met her on a blind date and, by grab, when I saw her I wouldn't let her go," he said. "I didn't find her until I was 31, then it took me 11 months to get her to either have me or leave me." g .DEVVQ' GARDNER, two letters of congratulations . life-lon- OBITUARIES Mckinloy Roundup JOHN Is Slated Deweyvillite The couple have three children: MacFarlane of Riverside; Robert Gardner of Deweyville and Mrs. Richard (Ina Beth) Pett of Brigham City. The couple also have 14 grandchildren and one great grandchild. In his letter. Senator Garn suggested the many changes Gardner must have seen in his community over the years. Has Deweyville changed? "You bet it has," is Gardner's instant reply. It was once a thriving town with two hotels, a clothing store, two grocery stores, a lumberyard and a pool hall and saloon, he noted. All the lumber to build Tremonton and Garland was hauled from the railroad siding at Deweyville. Gardner said he helped install the first power line through the community. He recalls installation of the large d powerlines which transverse the mountainside. "It took 16 head of horses to pull them up." he said. He served for "about 14 years, if I remember right" on the City Council as councilman. "I didn't get mayor," he added. "I didn't want it." He was Scoutmaster for many years and troop committeeman. He served as a counselor in the Sunday School and Elder's Quorum. He also served as branch president when he and his wife served an LDS mission in North Texas FRED HESS McKinley School is planned for Monday, April 18, from 9.30 to 11 a.m. - : - . certificate for their child, available from the Bureau of Vital Statistics. 554 S. 3rd East. There is a slight charge for the immunizations. Clinic hours are from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in 1970. The letters from the two Republican senators may have worked some of their purpose. Gardner is a Democrat. "That's what I've been all my life," he admitted. But, "now I've got to change," he chuckled.
