In two years time, there will be a new Mormon temonly it will be ple in Logan on the inside the present building, and in a completely new two story annex to the north of the present histor- ical edifice. The Logan LDS temple is scheduled to close on October 2 and will remain closed for about two years for extensive remodeling, according to an announcement made by the church. When the temple is opened again it will be practically a new temple on the inside, though the outside appearance of the original structure will be the same. TO the ACCORDING church building department, because of the age of the temple, the need to upgrade the old services and utilities and to increase the capacity of the building, most of the inside of the original building will be removed, leaving basically the four outside walls that have become a familiar landmark in the valley. Also included in the project will be the razing of the annex to the original building which houses the entrance, the chapel, cafeteria, nursery, laundry, clothing rooms and some offices, All of this will be built anew to increase the efficiency of the building. The remodeling plans call for the renewal of the baptismal font which is situated in the center of the building on the lower floor. PLANS CALL for the building to be adapted for film presentation of the "endowment ceremony." This will be similar to the presentation that is now being used in the Ogden, Provo, St. George and Mesa Temples. Four "ordinance" rooms are planned, leading into the Celestial room in the center of the building. Persons going through the temple will stay in one room until they enter the Celestial room The part of the temple the which is to be razed was constructed in annex three different stages. The first part, the chapel and part of the office space was completed with the main temple building in 1884. A new entrance and office space was added about 1917 and then' in 1949 the north wing was added. This contained the laundry, new entrance, clothes rooms, cafeteria and enlarged office. The new annex will be a two story structure on the north side of the temple proper. The first story of the annex, which will house the cafeteria and locker rooms, will be below ground level on the east side, but ground level on the west. The main entrance to the building will still be on the north side. A parking lot for 400 cars will be constructed on the West and South wides of the building. member of the church building department said that every effort will be A made to keep the atmosphere of the present temple, by preserving as much of the original handwork as possible. If the church follows the pattern set by the Mesa and St. George temple remodeling projects, the building would be opened for the remodeling work, and at completion, opened to the public for yiewing. It would then be rededicated and closed to all those who don't have recommends to enter. was to take seven years of hard work and sacrifice for the early Cache Valley Mormons. Most of the workmen for the building project were supplied by wards in the Logan Temple district, which at that time comprised Cache Valley, Box Elder and Bear Lake counties. This represented a local LDS population of 25,000. Some 256,000 cubic feet of rock weighing, nearly 20,000 tons was quarried from quarries in nearby Hyde Park and Green Canyon. The light buff sandstone seen in the battlements and towers were brought from quarries near Franklin. A SAWMILL was built in Logan Canyon where more than 1,000,000 feet of lumber, cut from the thickly wooded mountainsides, was processed. Only the finest lumber was selected for use in the Temple. Red and white pine were the principle varieties used. THE LOGAN Temple is one of two temples being remodeled at this time. The Hawaiian Temple is presently closed for remodeling. Temple-goer- s in the Logan Temple district will be divided among the Ogden and Idaho Falls temple districts, with those at the north end of the temple district going to the Idaho Falls temple. jf Those in the south part of the district will go to the Ogden temple.
