Officers of the Golden Spike and Box Elder Chapters of Sons of Utah Pioneers have cooperated in the erection of the monument and planning for the dedication. Heading the committees and work details are J. J. White, president of the Golden Spike Chapter; Frank Munns, immedi-a- t past president; William Hurd, vice president, Cy Gibbs and A. F. Turley; George L. Johnson, president of the Box Elder Chapter, and Claude Barker, immediate past president. This crossing is reported to be the best preserved stage coach station of the early pioneer period. The monument bears a bronze with the following plaque legend; HAMPTON'S BEAR RIVER CROSSING "The ford was used by Indians, fur trappers and mountain men. Around 1853 Ben Hampton and William Godbe operated a ferry for emigrant traffic. The site became a "home station" successively for stages of Cdiver & Conover, Ben and Wells Fargo. About 1866, Hampton, Godbe, Alvin Nichols, Sr., Mark Bigler and others erected the toll bridge, stage barns and rock hotel. The bridge was acquired by Box Elder County in 1883." Hol-lada- y, "In 1904 the rails reached Malad and traffic through here declined. The station remains one of the best preserved of all stage stops in the Old West." In other action relating to elementary schools, a committee was appointed to investigate conditions of overcrowding and other problems. Miss Jensen, a graduate of Bear River High School, was sponsored in the contest by Jessie's Fine Foods. Miss Jensen and her attendants were chosen from a group of 28 girls entered in the contest. The contest was sponsored by the Brigham City Junior Chamber of Commerce. Finals were held last Thursday at the Box Elder High School gym. Attendants to Miss Jensen were Miss Ruth Walker and Miss Sharon Johnsen. The reigning queen will represent the county in the Miss Utah State Fair contest.
