authorities of a tremendous attendance at the eighty first semiannual semi annual general conference tit of the church ot of jesus christ ot of latter day saints was fully realized not only was waa the attendance a record breaker bre aker but it was one ot of the most satisfactory conferences of the saints in many ways th the sessions were held upon three days beginning thursday october 6 G and lasting over sunday there being no session of the conference on saturday in order that tho the visitors might have an opportunity to visit the state fair the first session of the confer L nce ence was held thursday morning at 10 in the tabernacle and ta lie afternoon session at 2 while in the evening a convention of the genealogical society was held in the assembly hall ball 1 members of the faith were present from all part of the world but especially from utah idaho and a number of the nearby near by colonies of the enorch on sunday the authorities of the church were sustained by the members of the church present there were no vacancies in the higher of the church but the recent death of mrs bathsheba W smith one of the best beat known and most highly respected women in the church had caused a vacancy in the presidency of the relief society mrs airs emelene E B wells was chosen to succeed mrs airs smith music was a prominent feature ol of the conference in addition to the great organ and the famed tabernacle choir a number of the best soloists 0 of the state were on the musical pro grant although it had been feared president joseph F smith would not be ba able to be present owing to recent illness ho he presided at the opening session of the conference having risen from a sick bed ills ilia speaking was an effort ho however and several times during his talk of twenty minutes his voice broke and he was almost compelled to give way to his weakness after welcoming the saints and expressing his gratitude for such a large assemblage at the first meeting president smith talked on honor and truth ile he said there was never a time within his life when he be had done anything dishonest nor had he ever broken faith he said he declared that he had bad been true to his bis god to his church and to hla his fellow men and that there was nothing in his life which would make him quail when he came before the almighty on thi day of reckoning it was with a voice of challenge that president smith defended his honor and character against attacks coming he said from men within the church it was not a defense of the church position upon any matter nor in general in regard to the policies of president smith there have been some attacks against the preal president dent by members of the church it Is understood der stood and these president smith answered in no uncertain terms in spite of his bla weak condition the rest of af the work of the open opening trig session of the confer conference ende consisted of addresses by anthon H lund and john henry smith counsellors coun in the first presidency and four of the seven presidents of 0 seventies there are 2000 missionaries in the field said bald president lund who are working diligently in the cause ile he urged attendance of children ch idren and membership in the vari various oili organizations tor for their benefit he said the auy juven balle lla courts doing good work and be hoped the coming legislature would sustain them president john henry smith said the apostles of the church had never the latter day saints to steal to lie to bear false witness against their neighbors they hail always exhorted the people to pay theia debts and to live the upright life ile he urged the extreme necessity of vir tue among young men as well as among the maidens of zion at the afternoon session the speak ers era were seymour B young rulon S wells joseph W ln and charles it hart elder eder hart fart talked upon the doctrines doctrine 0 of o the church and declared that the book of mormon was of divine origin elder 1 ln swell dwelt at some length upon education as a part of the work of the mormon church seymour B young declared that he was absolutely certain that joseph F smith had never broken a pledge or a promise and that he be beloved hel bel eved in the president without qualification elder eider young said he be had been in the stakes of st john and st joseph in arizona and reported that all was flourishing in that wonderful country rulon rulan 8 wells velia declared that the children of israel must cleanse and purify their hearts by practicing falth faith and repent ance for sin ln and as tho the spirit grown within them they will receive the th knowledge of the truth at the friday sessions of the confer ence the features were the denunciation of the unfair tactics used by enemies of tho he mormon church ft a warning against the voicing of accusations accusation a against tho the general authorities by bv members of the church counsel to live clean and upright lives the prophesy that the mormons cormons would yet sweep over the nation eastward in victory and a general invitation t to 0 gentiles to como come to zion to receive the faith following t the he system adopted at tho the opening ening of the conference the first presidency continued the roll ot of members of the first seven presidents of seventies friday finis finished bed them and caled ca led upon five of the apostles apost lea during the days session during the morning session J ool col den kimball and brigham ll II roberts roberta both of the seventies made interesting addresses especially elder roberts roberta who traced the history of the church and spoke for a more careful investigation of the mormon faith by the outside world rather than a general criticism and ildi ridicule cule without re reason a in addition to these two speakers the conference members heard apostle joseph F smith jr youngest of the quorum of twelve and apostle anthony W ivens in the be tf taken ken up by the conference at the session which closed sunday but there was nothing in this regard only matters deeply concerning the church being considered it is estimated that people on
