discussion as to the form to be taken by the great national memorial to abraham lincoln 1 it has ban be been qu virtually decided that somo some testimonial fittingly indicating the nations gratitude to the martyr president must be provided all aa soon as aa the ideal form can be determined various suggestions havo have heen been made those which have found great eat favor including the proposal for or a magnificent marble memorial temple on the banks ot at tho the river at washington ind and the suggestion for a splendid memorial highway or boulevard from the national capital to the battlefield or of whatever be the form decided upon for the main memorial however it to la practically certain that it will have as aa a supplementary project the acquisition by the national government of what is known as the lincoln memorial museum at washington writes waldon fawcett for some years past the government has been tho the owner of the plain unpretentious brick house bouse across the street from fords theater to which the wounded president was carried after he had bad been struck down by booth and where he lay during the hours that hla his ufa life was ebbing away Ilo however wever the ho gobern ment does not own the tha wonderful collection of at lincoln relics that fills every nook and corner ol of this building the most remarkable collection of the kind ever gathered as representative of any american hero this collection which includes practically everything identified with alln colht coffis col fis personal history which has haa been possible of preservation la Is the property ot 0 a private individual mr 0 11 a veteran of the civil war who has baa always been an admirer of lincoln and who lias bal mode made the gathering ot at this collection hta his life work originally Original lr the collection was waa kept in the lincoln homestead at springfield ill III but later was removed to wash arloin and when con congress grows something more thau a dozen years ag ago purchased for the house where here lincoln died mr was waa allowed the use odthe ot the building bull dlug as a depository for his remarkable collection the owner of these thesa lincoln relics haft haa repeatedly had offers ot of almost tabu fabulous tous sums from private collectors and institutions for his treasures treas but with a patriotism worthy of the cause ho he stuck to his determination to keep the tao collection intact in tho hope that is in time it would take its rightful place as the property of the tia nation tion now con congress greis acquisition 0 of the premises on either cither side of 0 it and the tearing down of the tha houses which now hedge closely on the lincoln house on either cither side this purchase of 0 property proper will enable the beautifying of 0 the grounds and the provision of 0 a small park surrounding the bla historic torte house more important it will enable the tha property to bo be made reasonably fireproof and finally it will afford a site tor for an addition to the house which can be used as a shelter for additional relics as secured the lincoln memorial museum includes not only relics proper bu but t a splendid collection ot of lincoln portraits comprising more than likenesses and a library of more than 1000 volumes relative to lineal lincoln rl some idea of the immense value ot of the ropes relics in this museum may bo be formed from the tact fact that these mementoes include an original black locust rat rail split by lincoln in 1830 the office chair used by lincoln in his law office at springfield when he was elected president the last cook stove used by mrs airs lincoln in the homestead at springfield the lincoln family bible and the family cradle in which nil all the
