Walton, on the . ; - ilc TOO BANK THE OF END ROBBERY SENSATION. ' i ; THE of S. r-- . O ,r CAi , c H. Higgs confession I. Shafer, it seems that the real looters of the Tooele Commercial bank are at last secured. And, as the writer had suspected from the begining, the robbery was altogether an inside put up job; and the short and the long man was also a put up story too. But what will be the end of the matter we will have to wait and see. All three parties were bank employees; and of all men they should have been the most trust ful in the world; but following the spirit of the age they began to think that wealth was coming in too slow for their advanced plans, and they soon discovered how they could obtain more if it was not their own. The grandest monument in this world is an honest man, but it is very seldom in this age of trusts and pelf that an honest man is noticed. The rulers of the age are the Morgans, the Rocke-fellow- s, and the Vauderbilts, who can count their wealth by the millions whither it is all theirs or not; and it is in imitating such men that the sin of this age wealth is growing so fast. But the great fault, perhaps was in getting away with so little; jf it had been 90,000 instead of 9,000 they At might have been free men today. least that tallies most with the general success of robberies in the historical records of this age. So batterd and twisted and displaced are all parts of the vessel that it is little more than a confused mass of corroded and junk. Hence Gen. W. X. Bix-bchief of engineers in charge, has little hope of finding out definitely what caused the sinking of the ship, whither it was an accdential explosion inside of it or a hostile torpedo outside It is evident that the explosion must have been extremely severe at any rate. Even if the initial cause was a torpedo, it looks as If the magazine of the vessel had also been set off, for ruin is well nigh complete. A number of rel. ics have been found which seems to have had a miraculous escape. In the captains cabin was a bottle of bay rum uninjured. In anoth place an electric light bulb was still intact, and in another a paper cover novel was found where the man who had been reading had probably thrown it down on hearing the explosion. Barker of South Bend, Jnd., has a relic of historic interest-ithe form of a portion of a newspaper published at Frederickstown, .Md., on Wednesday, December 4, 1799. It is known as the Federal Gazette and has been in the possession of Mr. Barker for the last several years, having obtained it when his grandfather died. The paper is worn by age and is greatly discolored, yet the print is perfectly legible. It contains many ite ms of interest. In the want ad. column appears the following ad.: Wanted, three or four journeymen house carpenters at Harpers Ferry they will meet with instant employment, and $15 per month will be given them, if they are good workmen. In another place in the paper appears a reward notice for $20 for anyone who will recapture a slave escaped from the premises of Nathan Harris in Fredrick county.
