POOR CARE TAKEN OF SHOES If Workmen Were Care..l of Them the Business Wouldn't Be What It Is Now. D'd you ever notice," said the shoe salesman, that the people who take the poorest care of their shoes are the ones who can least afford to get new ones? It's a fact, though. Next time you ride in the Subway when the car Isnt so crowded you can see peoples feet take a look at the row of shoes. Youll find the laborers and working men of all soits wear shoes that show no signs of care since they came from the factory. The heavy brogans that once were black have become the color of natural leather; jou can see where shoes that have been wet have warped, lost all shape and are ready to crack; and those that havent been wet are just drying up as the life of the leather oozes out. I tell you. If the workingmen cared for their shoes properly the shoe business wouldnt be what it Is now. lam not talking about shine. and I haven't any special brand of blacking to sell. Its oil the leather needs, and It Isnt oil that makes shoes shine. When the farmers used to wear cowhide boots be fore they plowed and milked by machinery they used to take care of them by keeping tl.era greased with tallow', and the country store didn't sell more than one pair of shoes a year to a man. But the men who do the heavy work now are not so wise, and the shoe trade takes toll of their Ignorance. In Denver a movement has been started by leading educators of the city to instill free lunch counters in the c.ty schools, since a recent investiga--t on by school authorities shows tint many Denver sekooi children are underfed and are suffering from a lack of proper nutrition. At the Sheridan school reports show that 50 per cent cl the pupils are underfed and a free lunch counter already has been established there. The investigation has brought to light the fact that in many homes the child is given a penny with which to buy his lunch. At some of the very cheap lunch counters near the schools bowls of soup are served for a penny each. Dr. Charles E. Chadsey, a medical examiner for the schools, said that a solution of the luncn problem will mean a solution of part of the problem of the retarded pupil. A plan which probably will be adopted by the school board calls for the measuring and weighing of each school child at least twice a year. If the chi'd does not weigh as much as the average child of his or her age and is not as tall, the child will be considered as underfed and his condition will be investigated. 1 he?
