Mrs. Erickson tells her own story as follows: On the eve of my 102nd birthday, I will try to tell you a little of my life. As all people commence with their birthday, I will confess I was born on November 11, 1859, in Ledsjo, Sweden, a daughter of Pehr and Mary Katherine Anderson. When I was 6'J years of age, in company with my mother, two brothers, 10 and 13 years of age, we left Sweden to come to Utah, having to leave my father, who was to come later. After many days on the water, we were assigned to a company, with a Bro. Peterson in charge. We traveled by ox team, until we reached Echo Canyon, and being the month of October, the weather was not too good, so we were met by men from Salt Lake, who had come with mule teams to help us into the valley. Bro. Peterson took us to Mt Pleasant to make our home. He built a house and permitted us to live in two rooms. Mother had a loom, on which she wove cloth for men and womens clothing, and I used to help her. The Indians were quite troublesome and mean so after two years in Mt. Pleasant, Bro. Peterson decided to move to Grantsville, friendly. LOANS UP TO AM OUSTS IN rROKMTION NATJDNAU Tooolo 882-158- This was in 1868, 8 mission for 15 years. After being released from this Indian mission, my husband and I took up a ranch where I remained until my children were I old enough to enter school. then moved to Grantsville in 1898. In 1885, I went to Salt Lake to study obstetrics, and after graduating I commenced my practice. I not only brought babies into the world, but I was called into the homes for other ailments. Our first home was on the corner lot where Big Charley Johnsons house now stands. This house was built by Brother Peterson, and we were permitted to again live in two rooms. I had attended school while in Mt. Pleasant, and after moving to Grantsville, I attended my first school in the building across from the First Ward Church, which has been preserved by President J. Reuben Clark, his $2000 FINANCE COMPANY of 13 South Main Street Phone: father, Joshua R. Clarlc, being my first teacher, in 1869. When I was 14 years of age, I did a great deal of sewing fdt the people around me, and I went to Salt Lake and studied tailoring, and became quite professional, being able to make mens suits, as well as those bought in stores, if I may do just a little bragging. I was married in 1882 to John Erickson, and our first home was where Gene Anderson, my g nephew, is living. My husband, a farmer, was busy with mowing hay, harvesting grain and doing all duties connected with farm life. We were the parents of two children, Amy, who is married to John U. Hicks and resides in Salt Lake City; and Perry, who grew to manhood, married Mary Higgs, but he passed away in 1944. He built the home in which I now live. In 1883, we were called to go on a mission to the Indians in Ibapah, together with Owen H. Barms, Benjamin L. Bowen and families.
