However, in a previous column, I described a party at which I sat next to Jackie Kennedy at lunch, so perhaps I may be forgiven for telling of another recent occasion when 1 sat next to Mamie Eisenhower at break- . ;, 90 fast. The breakfast was held in the spacious garden of Congressman and Mrs. Perkins Bass of New Hampshire. It was a beautiful day, and the completely secluded garden was gay with small tables covered with bright cloths and bouquets of garden flowers in the center of each. A buffet was set up in the dining room. The guests helped themselves to orange juice, sweet roils, drinks, sausages, pancakes, and New Hampshire maple syrup and then took their plates out under the trrres. On my arrival, 1 was told that I was to sit at Mrs. Eisenhowers table; why, I dont know, but naturally, I was delighted, and I asked no questions but did as I was told. Mrs. Eisenhower was dressed in a becoming black silk shantung suit with a white pique pillbox hat, white purse and three-strapearl choker necklace. She said the main difference in their lives now is that they have more and longer vacations. They had a delightful time in California, and are looking forward to their European trip with a great deal of pleasure. This probably accounts for the fact that they both seemed very relaxed and carefree. The former president spoke informally, without notes, and they stayed to chat and visit with the ladies, which, needless to say, the ladies loved.
