Barrus received an honorable discharge at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, after serving three and one-ha-lf years with the U.S. Army in Germany. He entered the Army November , 1957, after graduating from the Grantsville high school. While in Germany he married Monika Angiers, a convert to the LDS Church.
