Show .. ...y a .. . I .x a a ... .. .. .x $ .. .. !$ . INTERESTING SIDELIGHTS ! t j There is a first time for everything. As near as we know, in listing. Likely todays want ad column, there is a peacock-for-salthe most beautiful of all birds, the peacock is coming back into its own as a pet to keep around the yard. One town in California has turned out some 300 of these birds to beautify the streets and countryside. It is said that when you get tired of looking at them, you can kill them and eat them, and the meat is similar to pheasant, except the peacock lives to be very old; and after 23 years or so, the meat could taste like old crow. They are expert watch dogs, and are very alert to any strange situation which may develop around the premises. The cry out of the bird is a good imitation of a womans cry in distress, and Myron Vorwaller of rda, who owns the local flock, says that it is not so bad when the neighbors become acquainted with the idea, and realize that he is not beating up on his wife. Mr. Vorwaller says the birds are not much trouble, and live principally on leaves and grasses. The males are the ones which have beautiful plumage, and sell from $10 to $75 each, and are three years old before they reach a fullness of their beauty. The hens are two years old before starting to lay eggs, and sell from $7.50 to $35. Pea cocks are a growing hobby throughout the country, and many are now to be found in Salt Lake Valley. Mr. Vorwaller is the only owner , of a flock in Tooele county that we know about. - oOQ We feel utterly ashamed of ourselves. We were caught the other day by the highway patrol exceeding the speed limit. Why dont we realize that speed limits are placed in effect to protect autoist, and the highway patrolmen are there to safeguard our welfare? We had no intention of breaking the law, but with appointments sometimes close together, and at distant points, we forget ourselves. Our sincere apology that we had to be reminded to be a good citizen. e oOo One of our nations greatest professional baseball players, who has devoted himself to help young people to avoid the juvenile delinquency class, was stunned, this week, when one of his own children was arrested for a crime. This not only happens in places, but right close to home, where parents and families have devoted their utmost wisdom and care in the upbringing of their children, and find themselves stabbed to the heart by those they love dearer than life itself, when they are caught in offenses against society and1 the law. It is one of the unanswered problems of life, and has been in existence since Cain stabbed our first parents in the heart by killing Abel. One of the ten commandments reads "Honor thy father and thy mother, and children must come to realize (hat this is a decree of God; and although we may escape the overseeing eye of our parents, we can never escape the overseeing eye of God, and our immediate and eventual acountability to Him cannot be sidefar-awa- y tracked. rehnmry n, Pros. If they dont learn how to work until they have been here 18 years, they may avoid the habit for the rest of their lives. This is one of the crimes which American society is committing against itself, and the penalty price is proving rather steep and is increasing daily. What America needs today is a resurvey of values. oOo It is officially reported that twice as many people (28 million, including eight million children) play musical instruments, as did 20 years ago. Between music and athletics in our schools, we have a great force to build substantial citizenry by filling in otherwise unused time, but even this is not 100 per cent effective. One of the contestants in the state swimming meet in Tooele, last week, was caught stealing cigarettes from one of our local merchant, and when the merchant was good enough to turn him loose, the young stranger made insulting gesters to our townsmen. George B. Cutten, president Emeritus of Colgate University, comes up with a rather potent remark, when he says, Probably the best teachers in American Colleges are athletic coaches. 1 1 might seem to be undignified to employ teachers as we do coaches Win the games, or seek another position. But it works. The photographs are taken by a com' pany that specializes in making aerial maps. Then Kennecott engineers use the maps to decide w hich areas of the mine will be worked for the next six months. Before Kennecott employed this company, it took six months to complete a map using traditional surveying methods. Now the map is finished in one month. This helps Kennecott plan mining operations more efficiently, and efficiency is essential to the successful production of copper. x Economy is another essential in producing copper successfully. Costs must be kept down when ore contains only 16 pounds of copper to the ton. Sometimes by coneconomy is achieved by farming work out tracting, as its often called. The contractor is a specialist with the equipment and experience needed for specific work. He is able to do the job more economically than Kennecott can. Contracting helps Kennecott center its jattention on its specialty the basic operations of mining, milling, smelting and refining copper. It helps Kennecott operate successfully.
