Just as spray planes finished dousing grasshopper infested land west of Tooele Monday, complaints about a new varmint with a big appetite started coming in. They are called Western Yellow Striped Army Worms by the county extension office. They do not fly around like grasshoppers. But do not let that sluggishness fool their gut is bottomless. you Homes and fields on the northeast side of Tooele are being invaded by the pests. They eat anything green and are disastrous to gardens. This is the third serious infestation of insects Tooele City has suffered this year. In April and May it was the mosquito. Next the grasshopper, and now the army worm. City Hall has received calls galore about the worm and where it has come from. One homeowner reported her entire patio was covered with worms, along with ornamental bushes and plants. Red began his sterling sports career in 1929 when he played baseball for Tooele under the watchful eye of head coach Sterling Harris. Then, DelPapa began his coaching career in 1930 and managed Tooele teams for 40 years until retiring his spikes in 1970. Despite his retirement from coaching, DelPapa manages to keep in touch with his ball players and the recreation community. The owner of a well known Newtown establishment, appropriately named Reds, DelPapa keeps close with the sports community by sponsoring everything from mens and womens softball to basketball, bowling and even volleyball. "Reds keeps me in touch with everybody, he stated. "They come up and see me. Its a good place for me to keep in contact with them. I also like to sponsor teams throughout the year. He feels that by sponsoring recreational teams he is doing his part to help kids keep active and out of trouble. r "Ive been helping Tooele kids ail my life and Im still doing it. But I enjoy helping sponsor them. These kids need something to do and I enjoy watching sports. Red not only helps sponsor local sports teams, be has been one of the big reasons that Tooele has fields and leagues to play in. He helped start the youth baseball league. Babe Ruth League and kept Tooele in baseball leagues in Salt Lake City. As a part of the city parks and recreation crew from 1944-6he helped build parks throughout the city as well as helping construct Oquirrh Hills 8 Golf Course. Sports has been a main Reds life. part of He has coached the likes of Kay Rigby, Joe Busico, Angelo John Thoams and Howard Cer-ron- i, Bump Dunlavy. The native plans on in for the rest of Tooele staying his life. "I like Tooele, Red said. 1 had a chance to leave Tooele for a job. But I just love Tooele and plan on staying here. I love the area here. I used to do a lot of hunting and fishing here. "And I like the people in Tooele. You get to know all of these people and you hate to leave. I dont plan on ever leaving Tooele, he said. Tooele has been great for Red and Red has been great for Tooele.
