Led by one junior and five sophomores, the Lady Wildcats captured eighth place at the 1A state track meet in Provo May t Saturday. The Wildcat paced the 1A school with a second place in the discus, sixth in the 400 meter dash and teamed up with three other Wendover youngsters to capture a third and fourth in the medley and 1600 meter relays , f cheerleading outfit. Nobody can better notice the respectfully. Dahlstrom won a silver finish in the discus with a runner-utoss of 93-- yz and placed sixth in the 400 meter with a time of 1:06.80. Last year, she won both events in the Region Eleven meet while placing second in both events this season. But what makes these achievements so remarkable is that although she is academically a sophomore, realistically she p 8 ' I t I ' m n, . is only a freshman. Because of her academic ex- cellence, Dahlstrom was advanced from sixth to eighth grade without having to make an appearance in seventh. After scoring four unearned runs in the second, Union blew a 0 advantage as Grantsville ripped Cougar loser Mike Olsen for five runs in the third and fourth and held on for a 4 victory in the first game. But the tables were turned in the nightcap as Grantsville leading committed sue errors in the disastrous fifth, leading to Union six runs and eventually a Cougar victory in nine innings at Grantsville for a split. The loss dropped the Cowboys to overall and 1 on the season. 4-- 5-- 7-- 9-- 8 3-- 7 Although, picked to win the region title, the Cougars never caused a disturbance at the plate all evening. It was the errors taht gave Union a welcomed split. Grantsville took command of the second game with a big six run inning in the second frame, all with two outs. Ty Bateman and Brian Hansen sparked the Cowpokes with lead off singles. With the next two GHS hitters sent down in order, Grantsville starter, Kenny Butler rekindled the Cowpokes with a two RBI double to give the Cowboys a 1 lead. 2-- walk to Troy Barney kept Grantsville going and Jared followed with a single, scoring Butler and moving Barney to third. Hunsaker stole second and Gary Dalton belted home both runners with a single. A Grantsville win and region sweep looked in the bag. It wasnt until the fifth inning that Union sprang to life with Grantsvilles help. The Cougars erupted for six runs on six Cowpoke miscues and only one hit to knot the game up at and force the game into extra 7-- frames. In the seventh, Grantsville pushed home a run when B.A. Valdez dashed home on a Cougar throwing error. Back came Union in their half of the seventh when Bob Riding belted a two out double and scored when Mike Olsen delivered a game tying single. The Cowboys dodged a bullet when GHS reliever Valdez picked off Olsen at second with the winning run. With runners at first and second, Mike Ware saved Grantsville in the eighth by coming up with a sure game winning hit and throwing out the Cougar to end the inning and keep the Cougars from scoring. Union ended the game in the ninth with an unusual strategic move. With the sacks loaded, Cougar head coach Brent Fieldsted called for a suicide squeeze. Whitey Crozier dashed home to the game winner with the unsuspecting Valdez in the wind-uposition and helpless. Mike Ware paced Grantsville with two doubles while Hunsaker and Hansen each collected three, Dalton and Valdez also chipped in with two hits apiece. Riding belted out three hits with Mezener recording two. Grantsville 5, Union 4 defiGrantsville overcame a cit with two big innings and held on for the slim one run victory.
